-- first deaf person to become EMT in her nation
Nechama Loebel, who is deaf, has become Israel's first
deaf EMT. She successfully completed training in
EMT courses offered by United Hatzalah, a national
emergency medical services agency. Here in USA,
deaf people face fierce local resistance when
they want to become EMT's. It is different
in Israel. Her picture is at:

-- portable deaf device that weighs 16 pounds
A portable deaf device that weighs 16 pounds?
It was a hearing aid - way back in 1923;
brand name was Octophone, which was said
to be the world's first hearing aid with
a battery! As years fly ahead, hearing aids
weigh practically zero pounds. This fact
was mentioned in a newspaper trivia today.
-- deaf student in trouble because of computer error
B. Rakesh Balamurugan is a deaf student at an engineering
college in India. The university placed him in a 5-year
program instead of the normal 4-year program, because
of his deafness. His 5-year status was not coded
in the computer. As a result, the university thought
he finished classes and still owed money on university
tuition. His "debt" was sold to a collection agency,
which started to harass his family for payment.
The university and the collection agency realized
the coding error but continues this harassment!
