-- a busy deaf mime
We have had deaf mimes; the most notable mime was
Bernard Bragg, who had his own TV show in San
Francisco during the early fifties before he
changed his focus to acting. The latest
deaf mime is a busy person - JJ Jones, out
of Missouri. In addition to teaching mime
at a community college, he travels, giving
performances and workshops at schools
and colleges, state fairs, deaf events, etc.
-- a deaf-owned ramen restaurant overcomes a bad start
Tokizawa Tadayoshi, a deaf resident of Takasaki-shi,
a town near Tokyo, quit his job with the auto parts
factory to open his own ramen restaurant. Because
of communication problems with his hearing customers,
business was terrible for the first few months.
Eventually he developed a special paper menu where
the hearing customers could just pencil in their
orders. Business then improved - and customers
liked him. One customer even shared a secret
recipe with him to sell more ramen orders!
