Top stories about the deaf:
Japan has a law - name of the law is lengthy -
Law for the Elimination of Discrimination of Persons with Disabilities. As a result, Akashi-shi, a city
in the western part of Japan, is giving financial
subsidies to its deaf citizens (sort of SSDI).
Turmoil is going on at TAFE, a vocational and technical
college in Australia. Deaf students are angry that
their academic and guidance advisers were laid
off by the administration in a cut cutting move.
Deaf Shark Tank? It took place at Gallaudet this
week. Will we find deaf Bill Gates and deaf
Mark Zuckerberg and deaf Kevin Plank (Under Armour)?
The deaf that live in Isle of Man, a tiny island
nation between England and Ireland, have been
provided TV captions for the first time.
UNIQLO is a retail clothing chain in Japan.
And for the first time this chain hired
a deaf woman to be an assistant store manager.

CHANGING THE PRINTER TONER
A printer in a computer room needed a new toner.
A hearing woman, with no real experience, struggled
with the toner.
A deaf man saw it all and knew how to put in a
new toner, but he kept quiet and stayed back.
Reason is that if he butts in and tries to help
the hearing woman, she may scream "assault and
battery" because she does not know how to communicate
with the deaf.
As a result, the woman messed up and ruined the
new toner!

SCARY GESTURES AT DOCTOR'S OFFICE
A deaf man brought his hearing wife to the
doctor's office for a routine operation.
The wife entered the operating room and
the door was shut. The deaf man had to wait
outside.
Suddenly a medical assistant came out of
the room (but quickly shut the door). She
was gesturing with another medical assistant.
It was not sign language but the gestures looked
like if the wife had problems during the
operation.
Hearing people in the waiting room could
hear the conversation. Deaf person in the
waiting room was scared something serious
happened to the wife.
Fortunately the operation was fine.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
In 1982, the first realtime closed captioning of a television program
was done by the National Captioning Institute. Before that, all
closed captioning had been done using a preprogrammed or prescripted
method. There had always been a delay in order to allow time for the
captions to be prepared.
With the first realtime captioning, it meant that the captioning
could be done live as the event was occurring. The first realtime
captions were part of an Academy Awards presentation that had been
kept secret so no captions could be prepared ahead of time.
Later that same year, on October 11, 1982, probably the most
important event in television closed captioning took place when ABC's
nationally televised "World News Tonight" was captioned as it was
being broadcast live. This was the first national news show that was
captioned live as it was taking place.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Last week's DeafDigest mentioned Evelyn
Glennie refusing to have her "Touch the
Sound" film captioned despite her deafness.
A clarification is in order. It was not
her that refused to have captions; it was the
director that refused - when the film first
came out.
Fortunately David Pierce, who wanted to show
the film at the Deaf Movies Festival on August
18-19, 2006 in Sequin, Texas, talked the
director into captioning it.
And besides the DVD has captions on it.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
PlasticsSA is working with the Whisper Boat Building Academy
in South Africa to train thirty deaf individuals on
boat-building. It is with the hope that these trained
deaf individuals would eventually find employment in the
boat building field. Said a spokesperson:
There is a tremendous shortage of skilled labour in the
boat building industry; the deaf students are a welcome
relief in this shortage
