How popular are sign language classes in colleges? Very popular according to a survey by the Modern Language Association Survey, ranking 4th on the list. This survey says such classes have jumped 50 percent in a decade. Students at the Ernest C Drury School for the Deaf, in the province of Ontario, have joined with other Canadian schools in singing "Is Somebody Singing" while joining Astronaut Chris Hadfield with the International Space Station along with singer Ed Robertson. The state Education Committee is looking into ways how charter schools should be funded. Do newspapers in USA have stories of them passing difficult exams? No, but it is different in some countries in Asia and Africa. We are always reading about small towns desperate for physicians, even to the point of offering to pay off their massive medical school loans - in exchange of a long term commitment. What about deaf physicians not satisfied with current medical practices or facing discrimination with their medical peers? Would a small town practice be satisfactory for them? Isn't one interpreter enough? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series One of the reasons for some of the captioning bloopers that we see is because stenocaptioners write words phonetically rather than letter by letter as a typist would type words.  Court reporters, CART providers, and stenocaptioners all use the same type of steno machines with the same keyboard.  Before the days of realtime translation, court reporters could just write words that sounded the same in the same way phonetically, and then they would figure it out when they were transcribing it. For instance, a court reporter might write the words "there," "their," and "they're" in the same way on the steno machine.  This would be called a "conflict."  They would enter the steno into their dictionary and then define it with the English for all three words.  It might look like "there/their/they're" when it came up on the computer screen.  When editing the transcript, the court reporter could just type a "1," "2," or "3" when the cursor was on the conflict, and the proper word would appear in the transcript. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF getting this comment - it is not fair that hearing criminals are handcuffed behind their backs while deaf criminals are handcuffed in front of them! (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves.
