Top stories about the deaf:
Once again Sonny Wasilowski, who is deaf, campaigned for a
seat on the Faribault (MN) city council, but did not make
it. He finished 4th in a 5-candidate field.
David H. Pierce, also deaf, ran for a seat on the Sequin,
Texas town council. While he did not make it, he said he
had a lot of support during the campaign, and that it
was a good experience. In his district the turnout was the
highest among the other districts in this small town. And
interestingly enough it was a friendly campaign, so unlike
the Obama and Romney sniping at each other. The winner,
who works for a local university said she wants to use
David for her council work. Said David:
it was not a total loss
Yes, it is the same David that contributes The Old
Fogeys to DeafDigest
California's Disability Rights Legal Center had a ceremony
that awarded famed deaf cyclist Ashley Fiolek with the
Disability Rights in Sports Award.
Minnesota U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones is getting tough on restaurants that are not disabled-friendly, per the ADA regulations. Re the needs of deaf patrons, he is asking
these restaurants this question:
Is there a telephone device for the deaf available at the host station so a restaurant can take reservations from
people who are deaf?
Does the US Attorney realize we use relay services? In
that case, does the restaurant hang up on these relay
calls?
Many businesses in USA are being made aware of workplace
noise possibly causing deafness among their employees.
Not always that so in Zimbabwe. The National Social Security Authority which oversees social protection needs of
people in Zimbabwe is embarking on a campaign to educate
the businesses regarding noise pollution.

A MEETING CANCELATION
An important meeting in a small town was scheduled.
An interpreter was hired for that important meeting.
Everyone showed up at the important meeting, except
for one person.
That missing person was the interpreter. And it was
at the last minute. It was impossible, in the small

As a result, the meeting was canceled - and everyone

MICROSOFT HOPES FOR PERFECT ASL TO VOICE TRANSLATION SOFTWARE
Microsoft engineers are working on software that tries to
translate from one language to another language - meaning
ASL to voice, and possibly the other way around - voice to ASL.
They are saying software is based on language patterns
and brain patterns, working together.
We will see who will win the translation race - Google
or Microsoft.

Rene Pellerin's corner:
I have Usher Syndrome Type II. The research found that several
different types of deafness and vision loss can occur with Usher
Syndrome. Usher Syndrome means you are Deaf and have Retinitis
Pigmentosa (RP). With this eye disorder, we lose much of our side
vision when we get older. Here are some ideas for you to try. Go to
your kitchen and get a funnel. Have the large opening of the funnel
over your eye. Close your other eye. Try watching TV or
having conversation with your loved ones and try reading the
newspaper.
When I grew up, I was mostly "Deaf". Now I am legally blind (I
still see some) but I have tunnel vision and night-blindness. The
frustration I have is that family, friends and community members
cannot understand how blind I am. Arriving in a new place such as
hotel room, I need orientation to the room, for example. I need
information before I "dive" into the room.
This is an emotional frustration for me and many of us with Usher
Syndrome.
Rene's show business is now entering its 3rd year and it
focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
