DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Leon Grant,
North Carolina, who departed us. During the sixties
and seventies, he was a Deaf Basketball Immortal.
Standing 6'8 tall, he led his deaf teams to six
national tournament championships. Among all time
deaf basketball greats on all levels over the
years, Leon was #1.
- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
Geoff Tunstalls, a deaf Scot, is an ambitious businessman,
operating his successful bicycle repairing shop in Carlisle that employs a number of deaf people. Not stopping at it,
he is planning to establish a different second business -
a scallop-processing plant. He pays no attention to these
gloomy economic times and goes ahead with his plans. While
he is deaf, he does not use sign language.
Does it pay to mention the word deaf? This is the frustration
Quinn Cruise, a deaf woman faced when she attempted to find
an apartment to rent in Toronto. She sent over 30 emails
querying about an apartment to rent, explaining that she
was deaf. Total responses from landlords - zero! She then
removed the word deaf, and got some responses. Currently
the Toronto Federation of Metro Tenants Associations is
investigating this discrimination issue.

Is there a connection between deafness and football
concussions? Do not know, but Utah State University
is working with its own Communicative Disorders and
Deaf Education Department on concussions tests
of its athletes, football included. Said John Ribera,
director of Audiology:
Since balance and hearing are so interconnected, it only made sense to collaborate with our colleagues in the
athletics fields here at USU
Keep in mind NFL as well as other major sports leagues
are also concerned with concussions.
- Sunday September 4th
A Texas newspaper ran an article on winners and losers with
these new TV shows. A winner, the newspaper said is
Switched at Birth because it made the public aware of issues
the deaf people face
- Monday September 5th
For the Scranton School for Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Children,
the first day of classes was far from routine, as it is with
other deaf schools. It was the first day of classes on the
new campus the students could call their own. While Western
Pennsylvania School for the Deaf took over the operations
of the Scranton school two years ago, classes continued on the old Scranton campus until renovations were completed.
- Tuesday September 6th
Movie houses in the Vancouver area (Canada) do not make
things easier for the deaf that wish to view movie captions.
This is what Lisa Anderson-Kellet, a deaf activist and an
avid movie goer is accusing. When movie houses mess up with
the captions they give Lisa a "free movie pass" - but what
good is it if she has already collected 10 such freebie passes
in one year!
- Wednesday September 7th
Late deafness among senior citizens may lead to brain issues.
This is the claim that researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine (U of PA) are saying. Their work has been featured in the latest
edition of The Journal of Neuroscience.
- Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
Deaf people, wishing to enjoy the rugged outdoors at the
Yosemite National Park, will be able to have services
of interpreters. It was announced by The National Park Service,
but there is a piece of advice. They need make requests in
advance.

REAR WINDOW CAPTIONING SYSTEM WORTH IT?
Is Rear Window Captioning System worth it? Yes, it gives
us captions - but because of wear and tear over years of use
by deaf viewers, the equipment has become worn out.
Deaf viewers have complained about display screen showing
faded captions, the stand becoming wobbly, etc, etc.
Why cannot moviehouses replace old equipment with new
equipment? Costs may be the reason why moviehouses continue
with old equipment!

A SURPRISE ABOUT THE CANCELED DEAF SENIOR OF AMERICA CONFERENCE
The Deaf Seniors of America conference was supposed to take
place at Chicago recently, but it was canceled. DeafDigest
announced the cancelation few weeks ago.
But there was a big surprise. Many deaf people, already
made flight reservations and hotel reservations in advance,
did not stay home. They flew to Chicago to meet up with their
old friends and to have a good time.

YET ANOTHER DEAF SWINDLER
From time to time DeafDigest reminds everyone of
deaf swindlers.
Here is another one - The Securities and Exchange Commission
filed charges against Jody Dunn, a deaf Texan, of swindling
over 7,000 people out of their $3.4 millon. He promised them
big yields on life-insurance policies.
He pocketed nearly $354,000 and deposited the rest in offshore
accounts.
Sad to say, there will be more deaf swindlers in the months
to come. Just say no to promises that are suspicious.
BAER WILL TELL YOU IF THE DOG IS DEAF!
BAER can tell if the dog is deaf, BAER? Not, the name
of a person, but an acronym for
brainstem-auditory-evoked-response testing, which is
said to be 100 percent perfect.
Possibly BAER will work on human beings that play-pretend

GOLF HUMOR
A deaf man, golfing alone, asked a hearing golfer
if he could golf ahead because of his deafness.
The hearing golfer refused and then golfed first.
The hearing golfer hit the ball towards the green and was going to putt it.
Suddenly the hearing golfer was hit on the head
and was knocked out. When the hearing golfer regained
consciousness and got up on the ground, the deaf
golfer faced him and showed him four fingers.
Four fingers means fore. Hearing golfers shout it
out, while this deaf golfer flashes it out!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
With computer-aided transcription (CAT), more and more court
reporters found things that they wrote on their steno machines
that would not translate with the correct spelling when written
phonetically.
New ways of writing had to be developed.
One of the things reporters found they had to change was how
they wrote certain vowel sounds.
What is a reporter to do with the words "pare," "pair," and
"pear"?
Before using the computer to translate their notes, most court
reporters wrote them all the same. Even after using the computer,
many reporters still found it easier to just let the computer
translate it as "pare/pair/pear," and then pick 1, 2, or 3 when
editing the transcript.
Some reporters found they could write "pair" differently, but
they chose to let the computer translate "pare/pear," and then
the reporter would choose between those two words when editing
the transcript.
It can still be a challenge for even the best court reporter or
captioner when writing at over 200 words a minute to remember
how to differentiate among these words.
A DEAF-MADE BARBEQUE SAUCE
Go to any big supermarket and look at the barbeque bottles
on the shelf. There are so many of them.
Any of them deaf-made? Probably not but there is a new
barbeque sold independently by a deaf man.
It is called "Deaf Man's BBQ" and the deaf man is
Raheem (his last name since his first name has not been
disclosed) and he started getting into business last year
in Los Angeles.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED
There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.
True or false?
DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:
A star deaf athlete, who formerly played in the pros,
stopped at a bar for some beers after a game. A
chance encounter with a group of deaf people, forever
changed the deaf athlete's life. They told the star
athlete, who did not know signs at that time, of sports
that are being played by the deaf with national deaf tournaments in basketball, flag football and softball. And that there is Deaf Culture in the Deaf Community.
To this day, this star athlete has blessed a chance
encounter with the deaf at a bar!

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
Why do some late-deafened individuals accept their
hearing loss and do something about it. And why do
others deny and continue to deny forever? According
to a recent web posting, it is a matter of individual
attitude. Some are too proud to admit their hearing
loss whereas others are not too embarrassed to seek
assistance.

According to a recent newspaper story, there is
a JALA - which stands for Jacksonville Area Legal Aid
in Florida. This newspaper says that JALA has a Legal Aid program for deaf or hard-of-hearing persons.

Al Pimentel took early retirement and is no longer the
headmaster at the New York School for the Deaf. He planned
to retire "in a couple of years," but had a change of heart.

A deaf doctor at Anderson University in South
Carolina? Not quite, but as far as athletes are
concerned, it may be pretty much quite so.
Charlie Weir is the full time assistant trainer,
himself deaf and also very deaf to these wailing and
moaning aches and pains of his wounded athletes.

The Deaf Youth Leadership Program is a unique and exciting program of Deaf Services Center. This program serves Deaf/Hard of Hearing youth living in the Central Ohio area, ages 9 to 18. The program aims to assist youth in acquiring self-confidence, positive self-esteem, team work and leadership skills through Deaf Kids & Teens Club; Deaf Adventure Camp, Career Mentorship for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students and school visits.
Position:
Youth Program Coordinator, Part-time, 20 hours per week
Pay Range: $12.50 - $17.50 an hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Qualifications: - Bachelor degree in Deaf Education, Child Psychology, Social Work, Recreation and/or related field and at least one year paid experience working with children who are Deaf /Hard of Hearing OR High School Diploma with three years paid experience working with children who are Deaf /Hard of Hearing.
- An in-depth understanding of deafness, Deaf culture, and the issues for children who are deaf and their families.
- Exceptional communication skills and fluent in American Sign Language. - Computer skills- Email, Internet, MS Word, MS Publisher, MS Power Point, and Excel. - Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team, self-directed, well-organized and goal oriented.
- A valid Ohio drivers license.
Duties: - Responsible for the planning, scheduling and supervising of all youth program activities.
- Responsible for overseeing the creation of program event and news flyers that are to be distributed through mail and posted on the agency web site.

Required Experience:

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
Geoff Tunstalls, a deaf Scot, is an ambitious businessman,
operating his successful bicycle repairing shop in Carlisle that employs a number of deaf people. Not stopping at it,
he is planning to establish a different second business -
a scallop-processing plant. He pays no attention to these
gloomy economic times and goes ahead with his plans. While
he is deaf, he does not use sign language.
Does it pay to mention the word deaf? This is the frustration
Quinn Cruise, a deaf woman faced when she attempted to find
an apartment to rent in Toronto. She sent over 30 emails
querying about an apartment to rent, explaining that she
was deaf. Total responses from landlords - zero! She then
removed the word deaf, and got some responses. Currently
the Toronto Federation of Metro Tenants Associations is
investigating this discrimination issue.

Is there a connection between deafness and football
concussions? Do not know, but Utah State University
is working with its own Communicative Disorders and
Deaf Education Department on concussions tests
of its athletes, football included. Said John Ribera,
director of Audiology:
Since balance and hearing are so interconnected, it only made sense to collaborate with our colleagues in the
athletics fields here at USU
Keep in mind NFL as well as other major sports leagues
are also concerned with concussions.

A Texas newspaper ran an article on winners and losers with
these new TV shows. A winner, the newspaper said is
Switched at Birth because it made the public aware of issues
the deaf people face
- Monday September 5th
For the Scranton School for Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Children,
the first day of classes was far from routine, as it is with
other deaf schools. It was the first day of classes on the
new campus the students could call their own. While Western
Pennsylvania School for the Deaf took over the operations
of the Scranton school two years ago, classes continued on the old Scranton campus until renovations were completed.
- Tuesday September 6th
Movie houses in the Vancouver area (Canada) do not make
things easier for the deaf that wish to view movie captions.
This is what Lisa Anderson-Kellet, a deaf activist and an
avid movie goer is accusing. When movie houses mess up with
the captions they give Lisa a "free movie pass" - but what
good is it if she has already collected 10 such freebie passes
in one year!

Late deafness among senior citizens may lead to brain issues.
This is the claim that researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine (U of PA) are saying. Their work has been featured in the latest
edition of The Journal of Neuroscience.

Deaf people, wishing to enjoy the rugged outdoors at the
Yosemite National Park, will be able to have services
of interpreters. It was announced by The National Park Service,
but there is a piece of advice. They need make requests in
advance.

Is Rear Window Captioning System worth it? Yes, it gives
us captions - but because of wear and tear over years of use
by deaf viewers, the equipment has become worn out.
Deaf viewers have complained about display screen showing

A SURPRISE ABOUT THE CANCELED DEAF SENIOR OF AMERICA CONFERENCE
The Deaf Seniors of America conference was supposed to take
place at Chicago recently, but it was canceled. DeafDigest
announced the cancelation few weeks ago.
But there was a big surprise. Many deaf people, already
made flight reservations and hotel reservations in advance,
did not stay home. They flew to Chicago to meet up with their
old friends and to have a good time.

From time to time DeafDigest reminds everyone of

Here is another one - The Securities and Exchange Commission
filed charges against Jody Dunn, a deaf Texan, of swindling
over 7,000 people out of their $3.4 millon. He promised them
big yields on life-insurance policies.
He pocketed nearly $354,000 and deposited the rest in offshore
accounts.
Sad to say, there will be more deaf swindlers in the months
to come. Just say no to promises that are suspicious.

A deaf man, golfing alone, asked a hearing golfer
if he could golf ahead because of his deafness.
The hearing golfer refused and then golfed first.
The hearing golfer hit the ball towards the green and was going to putt it.
Suddenly the hearing golfer was hit on the head
and was knocked out. When the hearing golfer regained
consciousness and got up on the ground, the deaf
golfer faced him and showed him four fingers.
Four fingers means fore. Hearing golfers shout it

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
With computer-aided transcription (CAT), more and more court
reporters found things that they wrote on their steno machines
that would not translate with the correct spelling when written
phonetically.
New ways of writing had to be developed.
One of the things reporters found they had to change was how
they wrote certain vowel sounds.
What is a reporter to do with the words "pare," "pair," and
"pear"?
Before using the computer to translate their notes, most court
reporters wrote them all the same. Even after using the computer,
many reporters still found it easier to just let the computer

It can still be a challenge for even the best court reporter or
captioner when writing at over 200 words a minute to remember
how to differentiate among these words.
A DEAF-MADE BARBEQUE SAUCE
Go to any big supermarket and look at the barbeque bottles
on the shelf. There are so many of them.
Any of them deaf-made? Probably not but there is a new
barbeque sold independently by a deaf man.
It is called "Deaf Man's BBQ" and the deaf man is
Raheem (his last name since his first name has not been
disclosed) and he started getting into business last year
in Los Angeles.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED
There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.
True or false?
DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:
A star deaf athlete, who formerly played in the pros,
stopped at a bar for some beers after a game. A
chance encounter with a group of deaf people, forever
changed the deaf athlete's life. They told the star
athlete, who did not know signs at that time, of sports
that are being played by the deaf with national deaf tournaments in basketball, flag football and softball. And that there is Deaf Culture in the Deaf Community.
To this day, this star athlete has blessed a chance
encounter with the deaf at a bar!

The Deaf Youth Leadership Program is a unique and exciting program of Deaf Services Center. This program serves Deaf/Hard of Hearing youth living in the Central Ohio area, ages 9 to 18. The program aims to assist youth in acquiring self-confidence, positive self-esteem, team work and leadership skills through Deaf Kids & Teens Club; Deaf Adventure Camp, Career Mentorship for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students and school visits.
Position:
Youth Program Coordinator, Part-time, 20 hours per week
Pay Range: $12.50 - $17.50 an hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Qualifications: - Bachelor degree in Deaf Education, Child Psychology, Social Work, Recreation and/or related field and at least one year paid experience working with children who are Deaf /Hard of Hearing OR High School Diploma with three years paid experience working with children who are Deaf /Hard of Hearing.
- An in-depth understanding of deafness, Deaf culture, and the issues for children who are deaf and their families.
- Exceptional communication skills and fluent in American Sign Language. - Computer skills- Email, Internet, MS Word, MS Publisher, MS Power Point, and Excel. - Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team, self-directed, well-organized and goal oriented.
- A valid Ohio drivers license.
Duties: - Responsible for the planning, scheduling and supervising of all youth program activities.
- Responsible for overseeing the creation of program event and news flyers that are to be distributed through mail and posted on the agency web site.
- Responsible for overseeing the creation and updating information, flyers and photos of the youth program on agency website. - Promote, educate and collaborate with youth related organizations, schools, parents and the community about the youth program within Central Ohio. - Coordinate, utilize and seek volunteers to participate in the youth program. - Responsible for and working with the Director on the ongoing development, maintenance and expansion of the program, activities, meetings, reports and resources for the benefit of the success of the youth programs.

Brief Summary of Duties:
