-- the reason the CI was invented
Dr. Graeme Clark, an Australian, has been credited
with inventing the world's first CI. But why did he
invent it? To fix deafness? Possibly. Thinking a
CI is better than a hearing aid? Possibly. But
what was the real reason? His father was deaf!
The father was a pharmacist in a small Australian
town. The son felt bad seeing his father struggle
with patients in every day communications!
-- US News ranks Gallaudet above many well known colleges
The annual US News college ratings came out this week.
In the Regional University North Rankings, Gallaudet
was ranked 22nd best out of 189 regional colleges.
Which better known colleges did Gallaudet top?
Canisius College, La Salle University, St. Bonaventure
University, CUNY--City College and Towson University,
plus many more. What about NTID? Not NTID, but RIT,
which ranked 7th best. Comparing Gallaudet with RIT
is comparing apples and oranges. Gallaudet is
stand-alone while RIT has 8 colleges, including NTID.
-- the biggest challenge facing a deaf Usher syndrome hiker
Roger Poulin is deaf and has Usher syndrome. His goal was to
complete the Appalachian Trail hike (Georgia to Maine).
This trail is 2,185 miles long. He is accompanied on his hike
by Roni Lepore, a deaf Support Service provider, and herself
a hiker, too. The hike started three years ago and he is
already in Maine, with 100 miles to go. Easy? No - this is
the toughest part of the hike. No towns or paved roads
on this part of the 100-mile final stretch. And what is
even worse is that when winter comes, the park is closed
for the season - and each day counts between now and
the park closing date. He is not allowed to enter the
closed park!
