To read more about Chuck, please visit: http://deafdigest.com/chuck-baird-deaf-actor-artist-death/ A photograph of Chuck, with credits to Steve Baldwin & Paul Rutowski, is at: http://deafdigest.com/chuck-baird-photo-deaf/ DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Theresa Franklin, a British deaf businesswoman, that departed us. She owned a prosperous dog-based business that had many clients in the town of Hinckley, near Leicestershire, England. Her business - My World of Dogs - specialized in grooming, walking, training and day care. She also trained dogs for the blind. - What the stories are saying about the deaf? Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind was written up in a newspaper story. Depending on how readers wish to interpret the story, the school is thriving, serving 1,400 deaf and hard of hearing students. Or the school is suffering from a low enrollment, only 85 students on the Gooding campus. Thriving because the school is #1 source of reference for deaf students that reside hundreds of miles away from the Gooding campus. Suffering because the Gooding campus enrollment numbers is just too low. The Kentridge HS (WA) swimming team has a deaf swimming coach - Michael Dobner. And he is accompanied by his interpreter during practices and meets. And much of his communication with his swimmers is done by a white eraser board where he writes down messages and comments. How good is the team - only lost one dual meet and finishing up high in the post season meets. When not coaching the team he earns his pay by teaching ASL at three different schools. - Very Hot News When an elected public official promises something for the deaf and then backs off, then he feels the heat from the deaf community. This is what is happening to Conservative MP George Eustice. He promised to give opportunities for deaf children in 2010 while running for election. Come 2012, he voted to reduce benefits for deaf children. Said an angry family: We are angry and disappointed at Eustice's inconsistency - Sunday February 5th DeafDigest feared that Rachel Mazique, the ASL signer during Super Bowl opening ceremonies, would be cut off from the TV set. The fear was correct; no one wanting to see her sign-sing, was able to do so. Needless to say, Rachel was upset about it. DeafDigest does not blame her. - Monday February 6th A representative from Statistics Canada invited a deaf husband and wife to participate in a survey about technology. They accepted but requested services of an interpreter. Their request was turned down. Said Statistics Canada spokesperson: the incident should never have happened and will be investigated. - Tuesday February 7th A while ago DeafDigest mentioned a deaf man arrested during the G20 protest in Toronto. It was learned that all charges have been dropped. The attorney, arguing on behalf of the deaf man, said he was just being curious as to what was going on and was just crossing the street. The police yelled at him, ordering him to go back, and while he didn't he was arrested. - Wednesday February 8th Andrew Sigmaringam, a young deaf man, was awarded the Ontario Junior Citizen of Year. He was honored for his work at a mentor and leader among deaf people his age. - Deaf Miscellaneous stuff Home Depot, accused of violating the ADA by discriminating against deaf employees, reached agreement to settle the class action lawsuit. This chain has agreed to make their stores deaf-friendly for all deaf employees. ...... THE BARKING DOG AND THE DEAF Many deaf people own and love dogs. And many dogs bark - for these reasons (hunger, wanting to walk, not feeling too good, attention, etc) When a dog barks at a hearing person, the dog is immediately told to "shut up." When a dog barks at a deaf person and he sees it, then same thing - "shut up." But at night when the deaf person is sleeping or has company, then the barking dog gets away with it. THE DEAF MAN WON IN A LUCKY ELECTION CAMPAIGN Some years back in Florida, a deaf man, who never ran for public office, decided to run for election for a minor position. His opponent won the election for many years for that same minor position and was expected to win again. As time neared the election time, the hearing opponent dropped out of the election, leaving the deaf man as the only candidate. As the only candidate, he was immediately elected to that minor public office! REQUESTING A NEW UNIVERSITY IN KENYA The Kenya Society for the Deaf Children has recently asked the government to establish a university for qualified deaf students. The Kenyan leader said: the deaf students are not destined to be carpenters, tailors or book shelf makers. We have top brains among these students WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? that new interpreters cannot shadow veteran interpreters to learn new tips and tricks if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Using the steno keyboard of STKPWHRAO*EUFRPBLGTSDS, as you can see, only four of the vowels actually appear on the keyboard.  Captioners use the letters "EU" to make an "i." The same principle applies with the rest of the keys.  If a captioner hits "TK" with his/her left hand, that is a "d."  "TP" is "f."  "PW" is "b."  "PH" is "m."  "TPH" is "n." Every sound that is made as an initial consonant must be made with the letters "STKPWHR."  Therefore, when you see a captioning mistake and you cannot possibly imagine how a captioner could be so far off in the spelling of a word, it might be because he/she missed hitting the correct sound by one letter. For instance, if the captioner was trying to write "dad," he/she would write "TKAD."  If "TPAD" were written instead, you would end up with "fad." All sounds using final consonants in words must be written with the right hand on the steno machine.  The only letters available for final consonants are FRPBLGTSDZ.  Once again, we must use combinations of letters to make other letters. Since different letters are present on the right side of the keyboard than the left, these combinations will be different than the ones we use with the left hand.  For final consonants, "PB" would be "n." "PL" would be "m."  "BG" is "k." AN IMPORTANT REASON FOR A CI Why do many people get implanted? An audiologist gave an important, but a simple, reason. He said: When hearing aids aren't enough, cochlear implants can help He is right. .............................................................. .............................................................. We do need a deaf debating team to offer us a Deaf Perspective on this hot issue as opposed to listening to a Hearing Perspective. ...... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: Does it pay to be anti-hearing? There are some deaf people that do not want to have anything to do with the hearing? There was a Washington Post story on Jaime Contreras, not deaf, but an activist with the Service Employees International Union. He came to USA, not knowing a word of English, but taught himself the new language and after cleaning offices for years, became an activist for the union, yet making friends everywhere - politicians, the opposition, the media.
