DeafDigest - 13 January 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, January 13, 2014 -- one thing landlords will be afraid of There are lawsuits against apartment landlords for discriminating against deaf people that want to rent apartments. These lawsuits have been filed by the National Fair Housing Alliance. These landlords will tell lies and raise rent rates or offer lousy apartments, etc, etc. They are afraid of one thing - undercover deaf housing agents! These landlords know about these TV programs - Undercover Boss, Mystery Diners, etc, and they know that undercover deaf housing agents can ruin them!   -- a brave deaf man became a hero Four people were in an elevator in New York City, three of them hearing; the fourth person was deaf. The elevator fell down four floors, knocking out three hearing people unconscious. The deaf man, despite the impact on elevator hitting the bottom level, was still conscious. He pulled open the elevator roof and yelled for help in ASL. Luckily one of the rescuers knew ASL and could communicate with him. In due time all four people were rescued. Who was that deaf man and when did it take place? It was Henry Souwein and the year was 1913!   -- a deaf agency in middle of amusement park area Could a deaf agency be located in the middle of a world-famous amusement park area? Yes - the Deaf and Wellness Recreation Center is located in the Coney Island area in Brooklyn, NY just close to the beach and these famous amusement rides and attractions. There are hearing people that are not too happy about it and have filed lawsuits, saying zoning regulations have been violated. They say only entertainment-related businesses could be located in this area! The deaf center owners say they will be offering pottery and dance classes - which complies with the entertainment rules. What is next - the court room, of course!   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 01/12/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 01/12/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
