Introducing: "The Bomb Jr[tm]." Alarm Clock
There is a new kid in town. The Sonic Bomb Jr. Alarm Clock has
arrived and should prove to be just as popular as his older brother.
You can call him "The Bomb Jr[tm]". Even though he is smaller than
the Sonic Bomb, he is still plenty powerful with a 102dB audio alarm
and 6V bedshaker.
The Bomb Jr's smaller size makes him a perfect travel companion. Best
of all, Harris Communications has him priced at only $29.95, a great
price for a quality alarm clock with bed shaker!

- What the best stories are saying about the deaf?
Simon Terry, a deaf Briton and a Civil Service employee,
was honored with a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Prince Charles. Simon was honored for his years of service with the Child Support Agency, becoming an advisor for the rights and needs of children, especially
the deaf and the disabled. It is not known, however, if
he is oral or uses sign language.
The medical needs of the deaf people in the Frederick,
MD area would be enhanced if just one physician would
hire Marissa Clopper, a deaf woman, as the physician assistant. She has all the qualifications necessary
to become a qualified physician assistant. According
to a newspaper story, she has asked physicians'
offices in the Frederick area but they are not hiring
anyone. DeafDigest hopes she will get her big break
when a physician is not afraid to hire the deaf.
- Very Hot News
Philip Zazove, a deaf physician in Michigan, has been
appointed as Interim Chair of Family Medicine at the
University of Michigan. He said:
I believe I'm the first d/Deaf person who's chair of a medical department at an academic medical school
Congrats, Philip - and DeafDigest hopes his title
as Interim will be removed with the rest of the
job title intact.
- Sunday March 6th
In England, members of the Deafness Support Network
have been distributing 999 cards among firehouses,
These cards contain emergency telephone numbers
to alert the deaf in case of emergencies.
- Monday March 7th
The UpTake, a real time captioning company in Minnesota,
was honored by the Commission of the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans, for its work with captioning
of many political debates.
- Tuesday March 8th
It was announced that the National ADA Symposium will
be taking place at Las Vegas on May 8-11.
- Wednesday March 9th
The NAD announced the hiring of Andrew Phillips, a
past Gallaudet graduate, as the new staff attorney
with the Advocacy Center. He hails from California
School for the Deaf at Fremont prior to Gallaudet.
.....
(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)
....
Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
A deaf business owner in Zaire commented on a business
web site that he has been discriminated in business council
meetings because of his deafness. He said the speakers would
not slow down to make it easier to follow what was being said
and that he was deliberately seated at a considerable distance
from the table speakers.

BIG PROFITS AT DEAF NATIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS?
Is it true that national deaf basketball tournaments make
big profits for the host clubs?
Many deaf basketball tournaments lose money - because of high
expenses - hotels, transportation, referees, etc, etc.
Many host clubs make money from raffles, dances, car washes,
bake sales. The money pays off on tournament expenses. Money left
over is called "profit."
So, do these deaf basketball tournaments make money? You decide!

WORLD WAR II DEAF AND HEARING IRONY
Many young men were drafted to fight in the World War II. And there was a big irony.
Many hearing men did not want to fight and would do anything to avoid being drafted.
We had many young deaf men that wanted to fight but were turned down because of their deafness.
That is the big irony!

(for your convenience, video links are posted on top
of each DeafDigest edition)
BEING DEAF IN A HEARING FAMILY
Many of us grew up being the only deaf member of
a hearing family.
What was the most difficult thing for a deaf person
when he's the only one?
It is understanding what is going on. A hearing person
may have a strong, intimidating voice, scaring off hearing
family members. The deaf person knows nothing about it.
Or it is being the vicious object of family gossip,
only that the deaf person is unaware that everyone is
talking (negatively) about him!
OUR DEAF FILMMAKERS
How many deaf filmmakers did we have so many years
ago? Very few - possibly maybe just four or five.
We have many deaf filmmakers these days. Is it because
many years ago deaf people showed no interest in filmmaking?
Not really. It was expensive to purchase a film for
use in movie cameras. And even more expensive to get the
film developed in a lab. And when deaf actors mess up
their lines during the filming, they may have to go
through the same scene again, thus requiring more film.
Everything is so digital nowadays - hence a boom
in numbers of deaf filmmakers.

YELLING AND SHOUTING
When hearing people play sports, they rely on yelling
and shouting. When deaf people play sports, they rely
on eyes and on gestures.
An example was this:
"wall, wall, wall. You got room, you got room, you got room"
That was what one baseball outfielder warned him when
his teammate was chasing a fly ball near the outfield
walls.
A deaf outfielder would not hear this shouting, yet
he has eyes and would know, via 6th sense, that the wall is close by!
OUR LAST LAUGH AT AN EUGENICIST
Harry H. Laughlin, not deaf, was a prominent eugenicist
during the early part of the 20th century. He did not want the
deaf, plus other disabled individuals to have children.
What was our Last Laugh? He realized he was an epileptic,
and as a result, he had to practice what he was preaching -
meaning he and his wife would not have children!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

check out the system

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
With all the different areas of terminology that they might have to
deal with, I am sometimes asked if realtime captioners or CART
providers specialize in particular areas.
In today's fast-paced, technical environment, it seems like every
industry has its own set of acronyms and lingo. It is impossible for
someone to be an expert in every area.
Captioners do have areas of strength and weakness, but there is no
formal list that an organization like the National Court Reporters
Association keeps of areas of specialization for captioners.
Many broadcast captioners work with news broadcasts every day. There
are some captioning companies that work primarily in sports
captioning.
CART providers see a wide variety of subjects, especially in the
college classrooms. You might be working with a pre-med major one
day and a French literature major the next day.
Sometimes we are learning along with our consumers, but sometimes we
try to find someone more qualified to cover a class we feel unable to
handle. A CART provider I know has stated that math classes are out
of the question.
In the end, each captioner or CART provider will make a decision
about whether they feel qualified to provide services for a
particular event. Unfortunately, sometimes detailed information
isn't given to the captioner/CART provider in advance about the
topics to be discussed, so we could unknowingly "get in over our
heads."
AT THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ARTS FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND
If you live in Northern California, maybe you could
drop by the La Quinta Arts Festival, taking place
this weekend.
Dan McCabe is a metal sculptor that will be exhibiting
his wares at the festival. He spent 20 years learning this
craft.
What about it? He is deaf. He, however, does not use
sign language.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
A hard of hearing person told DeafDigest editor
while both were students at Gallaudet so many
years ago:
I hear but I don't listen
DeafDigest editor never forgot that comment.
Anyway The Hearing Review publication posted
a comment by a group of audiologists that said
hearing is a sense and listening is a skill.
And the brain is where hearing encounters listening.
......
The Deaf and the Law:
If you wish to know what EEOC is all about,
then do visit:
http://archive.eeoc.gov/
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Are audiological scientists getting their act together? Recently
announced was a "finding" from a team of British audiologists which
said that those with blue, green, grey and hazel eyes are deafness-prone
after a bout of meningitis. Yet those with brown eyes may die from
this same illness.
This conclusion was arrived after a sample study of just 130 deaf
patients. DEAFDIGEST is skeptical that such a tiny sample would
be the foundation for this newest medical "finding."
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Channel 12 which covers Greater Cincinnati and Northern
Kentucky said that, for financial reasons, they are
cutting back on captioned news.
They also said captions will continue if sponsors are
willing to pay for it.
Bottom line is - will sponsors pay for it? Passing
the buck on TV-related expenses is a way of life in
the TV industry.
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
A deaf person was employed by a law firm (not as attorney, though).
A hearing employee, excited upon seeing a
high profile celebrity entering the law firm
conference room, ran wildly towards the
deaf employee. She said that the celebrity
was here but the way she waved her hands
gave the impression that all employees
were welcome to say hi to that high
profile celebrity.
It was not that so, but it was the impression
given by that overexcited, wildly gesturing
hearing employee
....
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
You place your order at the bagel place. The person
behind the counter asks you:
do you want wham?
you are puzzled:
wham?
you then realize the question was:

And the brain is where hearing encounters listening.

It was not that so, but it was the impression
given by that overexcited, wildly gesturing
hearing employee
....
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

behind the counter asks you:
do you want wham?
you are puzzled:
wham?
you then realize the question was:
do you want cream?
