Top stories about the deaf:
There was a story about artificial intelligence
helping the deaf to hear. DeafDigest wonders if
they're replacing "cochlear implant" with
"artificial intelligence"?
Big British retailer Sainsbury is teaching all
employees on how to communicate with the deaf.
A training film was shown for this purpose.
Hearing students at Sylvan Elementary School (North
Carolina) have been learning sign language to communicate
with the school's only deaf student - to make him feel
at home.
The latest Social Justice Conference, hosted by CSUN,
will be focusing on Experiences of Deaf Individuals.
The thinking among some retired CIA operatives, according
to a newspaper story, is that while all of them may
not have deaf contacts, they feel they can establish
a high tech firm that will develop devices to help
the deaf to hear!

A SAD DEAF PRISON STORY
In a midwest city, a deaf ooach of a
deaf basketball club could not find enough
players to have a team. He gave up.
Reason? Few of his best players were
in prison!
Very sad.

ONE POUND OR ONE PIECE
A deaf man went to a butcher shop and
ordered one pound of Italian sausage.
He pointed "one" with his finger and
mouthed the words - one pound.
The clerk just gave him one piece.
The deaf person said "one pound, not
one piece".
The hearing clerk just nodded and
smiled!
Did the clerk freeze up, and was
smiling to cover it up?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Captioning and CART technology is changing at a rapid pace. Because we as a society have developed so many ways of communicating, the methods of providing access must also change.
Television captioning was the standard way people viewed media for many years, but now we have the Internet, smartphones, and the ability to bring laptop and tablet computers almost everywhere we go.
For a realtime captioner, keeping up with technology can be a daunting task. We used to hear that you should upgrade your computer every two years. Now you must upgrade your services frequently to fit the needs of your consumers.
Some students request a wireless connection in a classroom. Can you provide that? Some companies require that you use certain software to stream over the Internet. Can you do that? Videotapes have been replaced with many other formats. Can your encoder insert captions in other formats? Your customer wants access wherever he travels. Can you send the captions to his smartphone?
Keeping up with technological advances may be a challenge for some people because it can be costly and time consuming, but it can also be very rewarding. Watching someone read the captions on his or her smartphone for the first time and seeing the look of excitement and joy can make all the hard work seem worth it.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
What does DeafDigest feel about Sen. John McCain's
resignation from the Gallaudet Board of Trustees?
For one thing, he rarely attended the board
meetings. And another thing, instead of using his
political powers to broker a peaceful solution to
the presidential selection dispute, he chose to
stay away and to remain silent. He spoke up only after
the board voted to terminate the presidential-
designate appointment.
Apparently he was more concerned with his chances
in the 2008 presidential elections than to worry
about Gallaudet's needs. Keep in mind he is from
Arizona, a state with an interlinking network of
cooperating regional programs for the deaf and two
anchor-based state schools for the deaf in Tucson and
Phoenix.
His biggest mistake was not to get fully involved
while on the Board of Trustees. A huge shame!

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
An article re CI said that the best CI candidates are:
* those without hair cells in the inner ear
* those that have been recently late-deafened
* those with good speech and English skills
* those that are willing to trained to learn new skills
* those not afraid of anesthesia and surgery
* those that want to function in hearing world
* those that are realistic about CI's limitations
Bottom line - people who want CI may not necessarily be
best qualified
