-- big irony at a college
Barnard College, part of the Columbia University complex
in New York, was named after Frederick Barnard. He was
deaf and for a short time in his long career, taught
at American School for the Deaf and the New York
School for the Deaf before becoming the president
at Colunmbia University. The irony is that Barnard
College right now has problems with the Office
of Disability Services. For that reason, a
deaf student was not able to get accommodations
she needed!
-- major league baseball: ears or eyes
There was a story about major league baseball players
depending on their ears to follow the ball in action.
Our deaf baseball players depend on their eyes. We've
had these three famous deaf major league players -
Dummy Hoy, Dummy Taylor and Curtis Pride - plus many
deaf players have played in the minor leagues.
So when hearing people say "ears" we say "eyes"
-- captioning frustrations at a small town theater
An angry deaf movie-goer wrote a letter to a newspaper
editor, expressing her frustation with movie captions.
The manager of a multi-screen movie theater in a
small town (population 7,000) promised her that
captioning devices would be available soon. But
when she picked up the device, the screen was blank.
The manager explained that not all movies had this
captioning capability! Yet when she went to the
theater several times recently, the device continued
to be blank. She felt that the manager did not really
know how to turn on the device and gave this
"movie not designed for captions" excuse.
