A reprint is below: Eugene Hairston, who is deaf, passed away recently. There was confusion as some thought it was Ernest Hairston, another deaf person, that passed away. Both Hairstons are not related to each other. Eugene, in the days when pro boxing was a big time sport, was one of the world's best boxers. He faced and defeated some of the champion boxers. Suddenly, at the age of 21, he retired. A bad gash above his eyebrow would not heal properly and he was advised to stop boxing or he could go blind. Hairston's contribution to boxing, however, was huge. Because of his deafness, opposing boxers would continue to punch him after the bell has rung. Because of this unfairness, red lights were installed at corners to tell boxers that the round has ended! Top stories about the deaf: Vermont Interpreter Referral Service is saved despite the closing of the Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The Vermont Center for Independent Living has taken over the operations. The Malaysian Federation of the Deaf has asked the government to punish those that discriminate against the deaf! The deaf business incubation center was established in Derby, in Great Britain, in 2009 - in hopes of encouraging the deaf to set up businesses for themselves. Five years later, this idea has flopped. As a result, the center operators are now focusing on hearing would-be entrepreneurs. The Congress is thinking of a new law that would give the deaf a tax-free savings account. It would be called ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) Gallaudet has signed an agreement with Central Piedmont Community College to help train more new interpreters. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- RIT Sponsors Math Competition for Middle School Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Rochester Institute of Technology's Math Competition for Middle School Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing welcomes 6th, 7th and 8th graders to RIT in Rochester, New York, for a weekend of math competition and fun April 10 - 12, 2015. Now in its 8th year, this annual math competition for middle school students makes math fun and engaging. Participants solve a variety of math problems within designated time periods. Trophies and cash prizes go to the winners in several categories. And there also is time to socialize and make new friends. The first 25 schools that submit completed registration forms and payment, or payment authorizations, will be accepted to participate in the competition. This shout forced the interpreter to respond "thank you" in a whisper COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series "There are television news programs where some of the people speaking are from foreign countries (Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Pakistan, Syria, etc.). English is not the language of these countries; however, the captioning is in English. How is the captioner doing that?" If a person does not hear the sound of a newscast, what he or she may not realize is that there may be times when the video shown on the screen does not match the sound that is being heard. In this case, an interpreter's voice may actually be heard even though the video depicts a leader from a different country who may be speaking. In other instances, the people at the television station may show a clip of a news event where a person is speaking; yet the voice that is heard is that of the television anchor or reporter. For television programs that are captioned in advance, one of the ways that some captioning companies indicate that a person is speaking who is off screen is by putting the text in italics. However, it would not be possible to do that when a program is being captioned "live" or in realtime. A realtime captioner will usually write everything that is being said without indicating that the voice is coming from someone who cannot be seen. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF being asked - of a deaf person with excellent speaking skills are you from South Africa? or are you from another part of USA? (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves.
