In Australia, a deaf agency called "Deaf Can: Do" is
broke and wants to sell the building it owns. A hearing
church wants to buy the building. The deaf community
is afraid the church will kick out the deaf group.
The Bracknell Area Deaf & Hard-of-hearing Support Group
in England is worried. They are losing their funding
because the charity is broke.
A big issue among California interpreters is the
Judicial Council of California asking for comments
from the public. This group has proposed a provisional
certification for interpreters that lack such
court room interpreting certificates.

NAD & RID TO PARTNER TOGETHER
A difference a decade would make! Ten years ago
NAD and RID were at each other's throats, in bitter
disagreement on how interpreters should be certificated.
NAD's way or RID's way was what the disagreement focused on.
Now NAD and RID are buddies. Both issued a joint

missions and top it off with a Memorandum of
Understanding.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
By the late 1970s, the door to computer-aided translation (CAT) was
open for many court reporters. However, because of the cost, only
the large freelance firms could afford to purchase or lease the
systems that were available.
As time went on, the size of the computer hardware began to shrink,
and a number of different companies were formed to provide CAT
software.
One of the things that would completely revolutionize CAT over the
next few years was when IBM took a small microprocessor chip
manufactured by Intel Corporation, went to a small company in the
State of Washington named Microsoft, and had that company develop an
operating system for a new machine called a personal computer.
By the late 1980s, the first of the DOS-based CAT systems were coming
onto the market.

A deaf law school student struggled with classroom lectures.
Instead he had to do a lot of reading with law books that
were not used in the class. He had to "outstudy" the average
hearing law student in order to graduate and to pass
his bar exams.

Charles A Thomas, Danville, KY, served as the Acting
Superintendent of Kentucky Public Printing, May to September 1949. He was offered a permanent appointment
but declined since he wanted to return to his teaching
job as printing instructor at Kentucky School for
the Deaf. He was a master printer, capable of mastering
anything in the printing field - linotype, make up,
cold type, fixing up printing machinery, etc. He was deaf.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
A certain small town deaf social service agency has
been overwhelmed with client caseloads. In one month about
10 years ago there would be approximately 15 case loads.
But just recently that agency has already fielded 100 case
loads in just one month.
Why the increase? Possible for either of two reasons:
* word of mouth gets around and deaf clients know they
will get served better at that agency
* or sign of times - laid off deaf workers need assistance

New Hearing words get into the dictionary
every year.
New Deaf words don't. Why? Said Peter Sokolowski,
not deaf, editor-at-large, Merriam-Webster:
If somebody is using it to convey a specific idea and
that idea is successfully conveyed in that word, it's
ready to go in the dictionary
If this is the case then why such Deaf Words like
Coda, audism, bibi, etc get rejected every year?

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
When a deaf person, a big success in an important "hearing"
job mingles with the hearing people in a mixed deaf-hearing
party, the eyes of the deaf will be on him.
Why?
To see if he really functions as a hearing person as opposed
to a deaf person being successful in a hearing world despite
his profound deafness.
Often there are side comments such as "hearing people have to
gesticulate to communicate with him"!

Description:
Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Instruction
oversees and supervises the Curriculum Supervisor, Technology and Training

Responsibilities:
Provide daily leadership, guidance, supervision and direction to nine
program supervisors
Provide training, support, and visionary leadership in the areas of

intervention, professional learning communities, standards- based
education and classroom observations
Conduct Instructional Management Team meetings as well as some general
faculty meetings
Serve as a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet team with the other
Directors to discuss school wide issues
Provide leadership and training to ensure school wide consistency to
school and state policies, state education code, and federal legislation.
Utilize communication systems which promote and maintain a positive,
professional school climate
Oversee the recruitment and hiring processes for teachers, teaching
assistants, and program supervisors.
Supervise Director of Instruction secretary in the overall operations of
the Instruction Division
Promote positive relationships with staff, parents, students and the
community by soliciting their input and participation in school programs
and activities
Work closely with administrators and support staff in the Business office,
Student Services and Residential program to facilitate coordination of all
services which support the Instructional program
Coordinate and monitor all visiting interns and substitute teachers
Serve as a Disaster Team Leader for the Instructional staff in all
practice drills and in the event of disaster.
Work with Instructional supervisors on staff evaluations and all
disciplinary actions
Required Qualifications:
Five years experience as a classroom teacher in a program for the Deaf
Three years experience as a Supervisor or Principal of teachers
Fluency in ASL and standard written English
Master's degree and possession of or eligibility for California
credentials authorizing teaching and administrative services
Knowledge of state and federal laws related to education
- Ability to use technology effectively

fulfilling the mission of the school

Program Manager - Community Rehabilitation Services

Maine Center on Deafness is on the fast track, seeking applications
for the position of Program Manager for a newly developed,
grant-funded position to provide Community Rehabilitation Services to
Deaf individuals and people with hearing loss in the Greater Portland
area. This is a position for a highly motivated self-starter with
management skills and experience who can comply with new requirements
and expectations for job development and job coaching. The Program
Manager will follow enhanced standards for serving nontraditional job
seekers who are Deaf or have hearing loss. This is a 20 hour per week
benefits-eligible position with the potential to expand.
Position Overview: The Program Manager will be responsible for the
following duties and expectations:
* Work with the State of Maine Bureau of Rehabilitation Services to
learn the newly-developed structure of Community Rehabilitation
Providers (CRP) in Maine
* Develop relationships with employers to "sell" them on the idea
of hiring these job seekers
* Develop and direct an Advisory Council of invested partners to
meet on a quarterly basis to ensure program quality and service
provision
* Recruit, manage, and supervise three CRP's (job coaches) in their
work directly with job seekers and employers, and the completion
of required paperwork
* Prepare and report to Director of Financial Operations
qualitative and quantitative program data to satisfy City of
Portland HUD grant funding requirements
* Provide some direct CRP service to job seekers.
Position Requirements: The Program Manager must meet the following
requirements:
* Fluency in American Sign Language along with strong written
English and face-to-face communication skills
* Comfort and ability to communicate via live video technology and
other adaptive equipment
* Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint computer systems,
including documentation in a standardized database
* Completion of ACRE (Association of Community Rehabilitation
Educators) certification course or commitment to successfully
complete the course by January 1, 2014
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with clients of
varying communication methods who may have multiple disabilities
* The chosen candidate will be required to submit to a criminal
background and a motor vehicle record check that meets company
standards.
Additional Requirements: Applicants must possess excellent
interpersonal, communication and writing, time management and
follow-through skills. Any applicant must be a self-starter able to
manage multiple assignments with minimal oversight, must be able to
work effectively as a member of a small team and in collaboration
with the community, and be fluent in American Sign Language.
Interviews will contain components in both English (may be written)
and ASL. Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and use of
a reliable, insured vehicle. Extensive travel expected and some
periodic overnight travel may be required. Experience in office
management, Microsoft Office and Access, and front-line service
delivery is a must. Strong customer relations and/or sales background
and previous experience working with D/deaf, Hard of Hearing,
Late-Deafened and Deaf-Blind populations is greatly desired.
The position reports directly to the Executive Director, coordinates
projects with other managers and contributes to the advancement of
MCD's mission and vision.

Communication Access for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CACDHH) is looking for a General Manager. This position will be the principle officer for CACDHH and report directly to the Board of Directors.
Duties will include:
. Administer and evaluate the effectiveness of CACDHH.s four programs, Community Housing, Community interpreting, Senior citizens outreach and MSD.
. Supervise day to day operations of five departments.
. Negotiate, review and approve contracts with renters, funding agencies, various Community Mental Health organizations, Michigan School for the Deaf, and contract interpreters.
. Prepare annual operating budgets, develop annual growth plans, projections and present them to the board for approval.
. Maintain Organization's records, prepare and present management, operations and cost analysis by program reports to the Board of Directors.
. Insure Compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.
. Maintain relationships with the deaf community, all vendors, funding agencies, renters, landlords, community mental health organizations, contractors, and consultants.
. Solicit new business, develop and implement new marketing plans and strategies.
. Perform Human Resources function including hiring, terminations, employee reviews, and discipline. Review, maintain and update employee handbook, job descriptions and personnel files. Present all changes for board approval.
. Review benefit plans for compliance with all federal, state and local law.
. Develop, improve and expand relationships with agencies and organizations serving the Deaf community. . Perform any other duties, prepare reports, and act as liaison to the community, civic groups, government agencies and elected officials as directed by the board of directors or appointed committees.
Qualifications and Requirements:
. BA Degree required Masters preferred
. Must be fluent in American Sign Language(candidate will be tested using ASLPI)

Implement ASL/English bilingual methodology in daily instruction. Use appropriate communication skills with students, staff, and public as determined by the ASL/English evaluation. Qualifications: Master's degree required. At least ten years of management experience including a strong record of success in enrollment leadership, strategic marketing, and management within a complex, ambitious, and diverse institution. Extensive knowledge of enrollment trends and best practices, knowledge and skills in strategic planning, best practices in education, including student persistence, engagement and curriculum. Leadership skills in implementing best practices. Experience with and interest in using data to guide decision-making and measure results including the strategic use of need- and merit-based student financial aid and social media. Solid understanding of on-line business processes. Ability to inspire and, as needed, to mentor staff. Ability to communicate in a bilingual environment using American Sign Language and English.
