Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to John Conforth,
an Australian. He won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1975. He was deaf all his life but did not use sign language.
Top stories about the deaf:
Saito Harumichi, a deaf Japanese photographer, is having
his first public exhibit of his 160 photographs at the
Watari-Um Museum in Tokyo. He has won prizes in past
photography contests.
Always interesting to see what has become of the empty
buildings at some deaf schools. The South Dakota
School for the Deaf is leasing one of its buildings
to the Lutheran Social Services for its refugee
and immigrant services.
The Northern New York School for the Deaf, Malone, NY,
opened in 1887 and was closed for good during the
early 1940's. Its' surviving campus buildings went
through several hands - including a community college
and then a 4-year college. It has been vacant for years.
Now agreement has been reached to raze the buildings to
make way for playing fields for the local high school
teams.
The legislators at the Winter Session of Parliament of India
have postponed discussions on laws that would protect the
rights and needs of the deaf. The national deaf leaders
are angry about it.
the emergency text 911 system is being installed for the
deaf of Prince Edward Island province in Canada. It is
a first for them.

FIGHTING OR PLAYING?
We often see dogs rough it up with each other. Are they
fighting or playing? Hint - look at dog's tails and jaws.
We often see hearing people "rough" with each other.
Are they fighting or playing? Hearing people can tell by
listening to their voices - angry voice or playful
voice.
We, the deaf, often cannot tell if it is playing or
fighting!

HIRING A CONSULTANT IN A MOVIE FOR NOTHING
From time to time Hollywood people hire Deaf Consultantto work with directors and producers in a big filming that involves a deaf actor. And sometimes hiring the consultant is a waste of time and waste of money. Why? Because when filming is finished, the film editors may cut out scenes that involve deaf actors! - for ASL News version with captions, please visit: http://deafdigest.com/videos/deaf-actors-cut-out-of-movies/ if you have iPad, click on top video; if you have another computer, click on bottom video ..................................................... ..................................................... Deaf PAH road in New Zealand (a picture) http://deafdigest.com/pah-road-auckland-new-zealand/ ................................................ ................................................ HONG KONG TRYING TO CATCH UP WITH THE DEAF For years in China, being deaf was something that is to be ashamed of. It is different in Hong Kong, which incidentally is under Chinese control. Hong Kong has been in favor of allowing the deaf to use sign language. There was a big newspaper story about it. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being asked, while interpreting Are you deaf? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series The recent events involving an allegedly "fake" sign language interpreter at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa brought the need for quality communication access to the attention of people around the world. It is very important that people who use these services have well-trained, authentic interpreters. It is equally important that people who use the services of CART providers and captioners have access to accurate, readable captions. When a television show is prerecorded, the viewing audience deserves near-perfect captions for that show. The captioners have time to look up terms and spell everything properly. We should not settle for inaccurate, incorrect captions. When something is being captioned live, there will be some mistakes. It cannot be perfect. However, just as there was the "fake" interpreter in South Africa, there are some unqualified people saying they can provide CART or captioning. This is totally unacceptable. People who use the services of captioners and CART providers must let the people who hire unqualified captioners and CART providers know that this practice cannot be tolerated. We must make it clear to those responsible for hiring communication access providers that price is not the only determining factor when considering who to hire; the quality of the service is also very important. Did you know that - in the days when printing was a big trade - newspapers, books, magazines, business forms, etc, there were many printing shops in New York City. One of the biggest and most important printing shops in the early part of 20th century was owned and operated by Marcus Kenner, who was deaf. He made it a point to hire and promote deaf printers into administrative positions. Not just owning a printing business, he was heavily involved with deaf local and national activities. ..... News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: Is the state of Michigan hostile to the needs of the disabled, the deaf included? Do not know, but a recent series of state court decisions have thwarted the rights and the needs of the disabled. A recent issue was: is the motorist required to give way to the blind pedestrian that is crossing the street? The court said no. And while it does not impact on the deaf, it will mean one thing - that future deaf-related issues may not hold water in state court cases? Lest our memories are short, we, the deaf had to fight tooth and nail in the court case not too long time ago that involved a deaf mother that did not want a CI forced on her deaf children. Yes, that case was in Michigan. ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Deaf employees are often more productive than their co-workers. This was the message stressed by Frank Klees, not deaf, who is the Newmarket-Aurora MPP in Canada. The event was a roundtable discussion that took place recently in Ontario. ...... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: During this storm that hit much of USA, the emergency captions and emergency streaming were pretty much trying to fight each other - blocking just about everything on the TV screen. The FCC wants us to have captions, but did FCC show indifference when captions block emergency streaming messages? ....... A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say? a fellow employee was trying to tell me something. I thought he said: please row place this book to row place a book? Is he saying in bad English that he wanted me to place the book into a row on the shelf? No. He actually said: please replace this book -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- * YOU COULD PLACE YOUR PAID EMPLOYMENT ADS IN THIS SECTION * on a per-subscriber basis, the DeafDigest ad rates are the best in the nation. * For more information, send E-mail to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- - EXCITING EMPLOYMENT OPENINGS AT GLAD !! - - Public Relations Director - Los Angeles, CA - Placement Coordinator - West Covina, CA - Staff Interpreter - Los Angeles, CA To learn more about the above positions at GLAD, please go to our website: http://www.gladinc.org If interested for any of these positions then please submit resume and application to: Jeff Fetterman Human Resources Manager Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc. 2222 Laverna Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90041 V/TDD: (323) 550-4207 Fax #: (323) 550-4204 E-mail: mailto:jfetterman@gladinc.org -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- Job opening Tennessee Captioned Telephone Services Outreach Coordinator Hamilton Relay, Inc state of Tennessee Hamilton Relay, Inc. currently has a position open for ".Tennessee Captioned Telephone Services Outreach Coordinator" staffed in the state of Tennessee.
