-- the idea of a Congressional Deaf Caucus
DeafDigest mentioned few weeks ago that U.S. Rep. Kevin
Yoder was hoping to establish a Congressional Deaf Caucus.
So far, very little announcement, if any, has been made
about it. How did this idea come up? Yoder's congressional
district in Kansas is where Kansas School for the Deaf
is located. He wanted the Caucus to help the Congress
understand the needs of the deaf. One of his past
interns was deaf and he created a sign language video
hoping that Congress could be made accessible to the deaf.
This is how the idea of the Caucus brewed in Yoder's mind.
Will it work? Hope so.
-- an emergency alert joke in New York City
In Manhattan, Verizon repairs knocked out 1,500 fire alarm
boxes for few hours yesterday. The city officials sent out
an alert, advising the deaf, in event of emergency, to dial
911, wait four seconds and then tap the phone once for police
and twice for firemen or for medical emergency. It is a joke -
how many deaf people have telephones at home, since many of
us don't use TTY? Also if the deaf people cannot hear, they
may get confused on the timing - four seconds, then tap once
or twice, etc.
-- A deaf contestant on British reality TV program
Celebrity Big Brother is a popular TV program in Great
Britain. It is about a group of famous people sharing
a house with other non-famous housemates. And they vote
to kick someone out, and so on. Anway, Liz Jones, who is
deaf, was on the program. She was continously upset about
hearing housemates (famous and non-famous) not including
her in group discussions, group activities and group
horseplay, etc! And her negative talk about herself not
being comfortable with the group have turned off everyone!
