"Different Ways of Being" is a strong and sensitive novel that
intertwines multiple lives together while exploring the myths and
truth about Deaf Culture.

off.

Top stories about the deaf:
A deaf leader in Swaziland lamented the fact that
Deaf Education is not a priority in all of these
African nations. It is, he said, on the bottom of
their wish lists.
Demand by hearing people in New Zealand to learn
sign language has exceeded the availability of
sign language classes!
Airport personnel at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines were given sensitivity
training sessions so they could better accommodate
deaf passengers.
Two Floridians will be competing against each
other for the presidency of Gallaudet University
Alumni Association - Donalda Kay Ammons and
Andrew J. Lange. Voting takes place next month.
In Japan, they call it Stadium Bulletin Board,
but in USA it is simply called Scoreboard captions,
Anyway, for the first time in Japan, a stadium has installed scoreboard captions. It is the
Coke Athletic Stadium in Tottori Prefecture
in Western Japan.

A DEAF FOSSIL
Earth has many, many fossils. Were any of the
fossils deaf?
There was one - a fossil of a bat that is
52 million years old.
Bats are deaf. So, possibly this is the oldest
Deaf Fossil that we know about!

BE CAREFUL OF A SHOULDER TAP
Deaf people are always tapping other deaf people
on their shoulders to call attention.
The law says that if someone touches another person,
it is assault and battery.
It is not a problem when a deaf person is touched
because knows that he cannot hear and is being asked
to pay attention.
But if a deaf person accidentally taps a hearing
person on the shoulder, it may be a different story.
A deaf person in the postal service was twice
fired for touching a hearing person on the shoulder.
The hearing person complained and the deaf person was
fired. The union got the job back for the deaf person,
but again he was fired for the same reason.
So, touching a deaf person is different from
touching a hearing person.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
In the early 1970s, a number of court reporters and companies were looking at the opportunities that were available by using computer-aided translation (CAT).
However, in the initial stages of CAT, the computer that was being used to translate the reporter's steno notes was not at the same location as the reporter. The data was sent over phone lines to a processing unit at another location for some of the systems, and in other cases the data was sent on cassettes.
The debate at this point became whether to use a mainframe computer with a universal dictionary, which resulted in very fast translation, or to use a minicomputer and a personalized dictionary, which resulted in a much slower but more accurate translation because it was tailored to the individual reporter's writing style. Even the "minicomputers" were so large that they would take up most of one wall of an office.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Large groups of protesting deaf people have been
marching on the streets in the nation's capital,
angry about an issue and demanding action.
In Washington, DC, the nation's capital?
No, this protest is taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The protesters are demanding the ouster of chairperson
Vassil Panev and his board of directors affiliated with
the Union of the Deaf of Bulgaria.
The Union of the Deaf is sort of like our NAD. These
deaf Bulgarians were complaining of discrimination at
their places of employment at sheltered workplace sites.
And that Panev and his people have been indifferent and
insensitive to their complaints.
(editor's note: did this protest help? Do not know)
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
There are some prisons that do not know how to deal with
deaf inmates with health issues that require medication.
An example is the Allegheny County Jail in Pennsylvania.
A deaf inmate needed medication and repeatedly requested it
with the prison staff only to be ignored. After getting out,
he filed a lawsuit in federal court. The county then reached
settlement with him.
