DeafDigest - 16 December 2013

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, December 16, 2013 -- a college hints that deaf students are not welcome Lennard J. Davis, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, wrote an article, hinting that deaf students are not welcome. Yes, he was being sarcastic. He pointed out that most events and lectures lack interpreters, and that when one wants an interpreter, a request must be made in advance. And many interpreters have poor signing skills. And for last minute events, it is impossible to get an interpreter. He also pointed out an irony - that nearly 170 colleges accept sign language as a foreign language requirements, but few offer real sign language courses.   -- Two different types of flashing smoke detectors for us? Are there two different types of flashing smoke detectors for us - one for the deaf and the other one for hard of impaired? The Worcester Telegram (MA) newspaper ran this announcement - The fire department and Board of Health will request deaf or hearing-impaired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for town residences at no cost. For the deaf or for the hearing -impaired? Must select one but not the other? DeafDigest knows the writer was careless - he should have wrote "for the deaf/hearing-impaired"   -- 30th president of USA to be honored by the US Mint The 30th president of USA was Calvin Coolidge. There will be a $1.00 coin minted in his honor in this coming year 2014. Each presidential coin has a First Spouse Coin version. Coolidge's wife Grace taught at Clarke School for the Deaf before she married her husband. What is the big irony? That the proposed coin design has Grace on it and it shows finger spelling of the letters U-S-A! Clarke School has never permitted sign language! Will the Clarke alumni be upset? Many of them use sign language. It probably may be the administration that will be upset. This information was provided by Kenneth S. Rothschild. The First Spouse coin, by the way, will be minted in gold and while it has a $5.00 value - the price of the coin itself will be in the $800.00 range. However, there will be a modified design for an afforable bronze medal offering.   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 12/15/13 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 12/15/13 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
