-- remembering deaf parents on Father's Day
Dennis Daugaard, a Coda, is the governor of
South Dakota. A newspaper ran a story of him
remembering his deaf parents. The father hoped
to make a full time living as a farmer on property
he owned. It was very tough during the fifties, so he
worked at several day jobs while farming at night,
just to make mortgage payments. When jobs were
hard to find, he was able to find work as janitor.
The governor said "he was the best father one could
ever want."
-- a deaf winner of a big state pageant
We all know that Heather Whitestone, a deaf woman
that knows ASL, was Miss America 1995. Will we have
another deaf winner? KT Maviglia, who is deaf, just
recently became Miss Michigan. We will find out on
September 14th if she will win Miss America. What
is the full name of KT? Do not know because she
prefers to be known as KT. She does not use ASL.
-- a hospital depends on family members as interpreters
A hospital knows deaf patients require interpreters. Yet
this hospital depends on note writing and on family members
doing the interpreting. Terrible? Yes! Why? Hospital is
broke and cannot afford interpreters? No, the hospital
is not broke. Then why no interpreters? Because none
is available - not in USA, but in Victoria, a state in
Australia!
