-- Uber's deaf drivers
Does Uber have 6,000 deaf drivers? This is what a
magazine story said. Yet, DeafDigest is worried
about Uber's self-driving cars. Would it cause
deaf drivers to lose jobs? Anyway, a picture is

-- a theater gives up because of no deaf actor
DeafDigest mentioned that a theatrical group in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, wanted to stage "Tribes"
play. Unable to find a volunteer deaf actor,
the theatrical group found a willing know-no-ASL
hearing actor. The Iowa Deaf Community protested,
and as a result, the play is being canceled -
unless a deaf actor can be found. Is this good
news or bad news? Good news is that hearing
producers know they can't get away by using
hearing actors for deaf roles. The bad news
is that we just don't have any willing
deaf actors around!
-- World Federation of the Deaf had a big role
We have the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD),
which is sort of like our own United Nations.
The WFD played a big role in one story. The
Koreas (South and North) both hate each other.
A small group of deaf North Koreans attended
the WFD conference and met up with the deaf
South Koreans. What happened? Just like deaf
people of different cultures, they got along
just fine, spending time chatting with each
other. It would have never happened "back
home" in either Korean nation!
