DeafDigest - 17 August 2011

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, August 17, 2011 -- A big deaf role in winning a major American horse race In standardbred racing, the biggest race is the Hambletonian.
It is like Kentucky Derby in horse racing, Indy 500
in car racing, Super Bowl in NFL, etc, etc. In this
year's Hambletonian, the horse, Broad Bahn won the
race. Helping Broad Bahn win this race was Risa Tanaka.
She is deaf and is the groom/caretaker of the horse,
tending to his needs 24 hours a day. She works closely
with the driver and the trainer as a team to get Broad
Bahn ready for all races.
To get an idea of what is standardbred racing,
look at right side of:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standardbred_horse   -- Are you confused with the FCC new rules on 800 numbers? The FCC explanations were not clear and were confusing.
But this hopefully may be a clarification on both VRS
and IP calls:
PAST - you got a 800 number from your relay provider.
Your hearing friends can make free long distance calls to you
through a relay provider, using your 800 relay number
PRESENT - FCC says no more; hearing friends cannot use your
800 number to make free long distance calls to you through
a relay provider
FUTURE - If you own a 800 number that you paid, you could forward
incoming calls to your VP number so hearing friends can make
free relay 800 calls to you".
-- Sign Language Law Firm A law firm in Lancashire, in the northern part of England,
has asked its staff members to learn sign language so that
they can advise deaf clients on their legal matters. This
law firm, operated by founder Saimina J Virmani, says
it will be the first law firm in United Kingdom to work
with the deaf.
-- To be deaf or to be blind, like using a light switch! Actress Azita Ghanizada, not deaf, is playing a role in
a new Syfy TV series - "Alphas." In that role she will be
a person of a "special abilities" meaning she will be either
deaf or blind. In other words when she uses her super-vision,
she becomes deaf, but when she uses her super-hearing, she
becomes blind - just a like light switch!

-- Deaf auto mechanic has advantage over hearing auto mechanic Daniel Lethcoe is deaf and is attending automotive classes in
Elizabethton, Tennessee. He hopes to become an automobile mechanic.
After classes he goes to a Toyota dealership to work on auto
repairs. The Toyota auto repair supervisor said that Daniel's
deafness is an advantage because he can feel the vibrations
that hearing mechanics do not know about! Of course if Daniel
has to ask a hearing mechanic about engine noises. It all
comes out even.
