-- hard of hearing football players need to thank Larry Brown
In 1969, Larry Brown reported to the Washington Redskins
training camp. Vince Lombardi, the head coach, noticed
that Larry was deaf in one ear. Lombardi got permission
from NFL to outfit Brown's helmet with a hearing aid,
so he can hear the quarterback's signals and the snap
count. Since then there have been a number of hard of
hearing players with these special helmets. For this
reason they need to thank Brown!
-- horror stories about medical interpreters
For the past several years deaf people in Salem, Oregon
have been complaining about interpreters at medical
facilities. In 2014, Salem Health cancelled its
contract with live interpreting agency and relied
on video remote interpreting (VRI) services. Since
then VRIs were forced on deaf patients that only
wanted live interpreters. These patients were
forced to use family members as interpreters
or to wait many hours for unqualified, but
cheaper, interpreters. Salem Health said
they are trying to improve this interpreting
situation.
