The court said: it is a violation of state law to not make closed captioning technology more available Top stories about the deaf: A group of deaf people in India have been picketing the tax collector's office, claiming that due to the Physically Handicapped Act of 1995, they should be exempt from paying taxes! Gaye Prudence Lyons, a deaf Australian woman, wanted to serve on the jury but was denied because of her deafness. As a result, she has filed a lawsuit, citing provisions of the Queensland Government Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, which is supposed to provide interpreters for the deaf. FCC has asked our big wireless carriers to hurry up on the text-to-911 services. Question is, despite agreement among these carriers, will they hurry up? The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is saying that the Apache ASL Trails, a deaf housing development in Arizona, discriminates against the non-deaf. Why? Because too many units in the developments are deaf occupied. When there is a crime in Mbombela, South Africa, the deaf people cannot use voice toll free numbers to report to inform the police. For that reason, a group of deaf people have asked the Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities to set up a free text wireless line. FATHER OF CAPTIONS Who invented the captions that we watch on TV? Could it be as many as half dozen people that are being credited, either correctly or falsely? From time to time DeafDigest editor reads the news and sees an article attributing someone, that we never heard of, as the Father of Captions. During the late seventies and early eighties, DeafDigest editor served as the executive director of TDI, which aggressively promoted captions. The person, in the government, that pushed for captions for years, was the late Mac Norwood. He probably knows who was the first one to come up with the captions. Unfortunately Mac passed away in the late eighties, and we may never know the truth. Most artists paint for years without being honored with an exhibition. Well, deaf British artist Peter Mugridge achieved his goal with an exhibit in Epsom. Not only that, he was able to sell some of his paintings. His paintings of sunsets, railways, aircraft ships, landscapes, astronomy subjects and buildings reflects his lifelong interest in railroads, astronomy and photography. Why not personal portraits? He said: I cannot get faces and digits right WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being asked this question: are you a family member of the deaf person you are interpreting for? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Our nation experienced another great tragedy this week.  Many, many people from all walks of life were affected by the shootings in Connecticut.  We are beginning to hear the names of heroes and people who risked their lives to save others, and their contributions are being recognized. As the sad and dreadful details of this event continued to emerge, news coverage around the world was focused on an elementary school in Newtown. We are so grateful for those who responded to this emergency and helped those in need. As we reflect on the occurrences of that day, we also might want to think about the contribution that captioners across the country made during this horrific massacre.  They provided access to the millions of Americans who required captioning in order to fully understand what was taking place. Thank you to those captioners who went above and beyond to write with tears streaming down their faces, lumps in their throats, and heavy hearts as they provided continuous coverage of these events.  They could not turn off the stories that became too difficult for them to deal with.  They may never know whose lives they touched. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF telling people that you are deaf only to be told "yes, I have a hearing loss, too" (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: When Gary gets mad, it is for a good reason. Gary Malkowski, the world's first elected ASL speaking elected public official, is being denied requests for interpreters by the Ontario Association of Former Parliamentarians. As a result he may file a law suit. The association is pleading poverty. The big irony was that when Gary shocked Canada by winning the election, the province immediately furnished him with interpreters without being asked. What this means is that while the government would furnish interpreters, the former parliamentarians, that formerly ran the government, would not follow suit. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: According to Baltimore City Paper (not to be confused with the Baltimore Sun), the 6th best art of 2007 is the piece turned out by Joseph Grigely. He painted "St. Cecilia" which is on exhibit at the Contemporary Museum. Joseph is deaf, a former NTID/RIT student and also a former Deaflympics hockey player and again, a former Gallaudet English instructor. ......
