DeafDigest - 17 December 2013

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, December 17, 2013 -- Who is Lennard Davis, that said deaf were not welcome in colleges? Yesterday's DeafDigest mentioned Lennard Davis as saying, sarcastically, that the deaf were not welcome in colleges. Is he anti-deaf or having a bad attitude towards the deaf? No way, as he is a Coda! His deaf father was Morris Davis, a champion race walker during the 1920's and 1930's. He would have been in the hearing Olympics, but for some reason he wasn't. Race walking? It is a race where the participants try to walk the fastest to win. Morris, born in Great Britain, emigrated to USA, and was a well known member of the New York City deaf community. For the 1965 Deaflympics in Washington, DC, he tried to coach a group of Gallaudet athletes to become race walkers. Unfortanately they all dropped out of training! Morris decided to be the sole American participant in the Deaflympics at the age of 65-something. No, he did not win the race, competing against walkers one-third of his age!   -- Another police blunder with the deaf! Janet Case, a deaf woman of Albuquerque, NM, was confronted by the police, because of problems with her landlord. The police told her to turn her back and face the wall Janet protested, saying she was deaf. The angry police officer tackled her to the ground, roughing her up before arresting her. The judge threw it out of the court. The civil rights people are upset about it. When arresting a deaf person there are two things. First, cannot handcuff them behind their backs. Second, cannot turn around their backs to face the wall. Despite training at the police academy and at workshops, there are always police officers that still do not know how to do the right thing with the deaf! Landlord problems? It was just noise by moving furniture around that tenants complained to the landlord!   -- Funny or not funny? Hearing comedians, trying to make us laugh, use bad jokes and bad humor. A perfect example was the Fake Mandela interpreter. Who tried to make these stupid jokes? Jimmy Kimmel, Will Ferrell, Keenan Thompson, Jay Pharoah, Natalie Morales, Paul Whitehouse, Daniel Kaluuya and others. These people are so desperate for jokes that it does not matter to them that we, the deaf, are insulted. In the past it was Lisa Lampanelli, Chelsea Lately, Frankie Boyle and others.
