Learn ASL Classifiers from "Wink" Smith Jr.
Non-native ASL users often struggle with selecting appropriate
classifiers to produce concepts in ASL. "Tangible, ASL Classifiers
Concepts", a DVD from Windell "Wink" Smith Jr., provides the tools
needed to select and practice classifiers and will help you feel
comfortable producing concepts through ASL by using classifiers.
The DVD features guided instructions and stories to create your own
work that you can then compare to Wink's versions of the same
stories.
A valuable DVD for anyone trying to improve their signing skills,
"Tangible" (DVD388) is available at Harris Communications for $19.99.

Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Mary Margaret Grove
who departed us as so young a lady. She was a senior
at Kansas School for the Deaf and she just celebrated
her 18th birthday and came home after performing at
the Academic Bowl Regionals.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Andrew DeFrancesco,
Medford, MA, who departed us. Not well known nationally,
he was well known in the Boston deaf community, heavily
involved in a range of local clubs and organizations,
always willing to help out when help was needed.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Seymour Bernstein,
Riverside, CA who departed us. Always interested in the
welfare of the deaf, he was usually involved in a long
range of activities such as Academic Bowl, Deaf Sports
Academy, legislative advocate as well as with the Inland
Empire Center on Deafness. While younger he served as the
boys' basketball coach at the school for the deaf.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jim Scoggins.
There is an adage - Behind Every Successful Woman
is a Supportive Husband and Jim filled the bill
perfectly. Jim was not deaf - but as Virginia L. Moore, Kentucky Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing,
put it this way:
Jim proved to be an advocate and partner as Bobbie Beth lead Kentucky CDHH to its success. He believed in equality and education, and passionately advocated for deaf rights and the right for all deaf and hard of hearing children to be educated to
their highest potential.
Thank you, Mary Margaret, Andrew, Seymour and Bill for serving
all of us in your various capacities.
Top stories about the deaf:
The Scotland National Deaf Children's Society
has demanded additional funding for mental
health professionals to work with the deaf.
This group is working with the Scottish Council on Deafness to achieve this goal.
In Hawaii, deaf people are up in arms over proposed cuts in living assistance and with interpreter referral service.
The Orange County Breeze is a newspaper that serves
the residents in Orange County, California. A key
person behind the newspaper scenes as well as operating
her own businesses and as a civic leader is Robin Marlena Itzler. She is deaf, and was written up in a
recent web posting.
A lobbyist can be expensive. The Jacksonville City Council needed a lobbyist to boost its cause.
And to make the expense worthwhile, the new lobbyist
will be asked to serve a number of groups in the
city - including the Illinois School for the Deaf.
The Berkeley Unified School District in California
is considering a switch from its bilingual teaching
method to an oral teaching method. This proposal
has got many people upset.

SMALL TOWN DEAF JOB SEEKERS
Years ago when times were great, it was not hard for
deaf people to find jobs, even in small towns.
A deaf service agency in the small town would refer deaf
clients to hearing agency that finds jobs for them.
Not any more. Both agencies have constantly been referring
deaf clients to each other, hoping the "other" agency will
find jobs for them.
Times have changed and this is sad.

WESLEY COLLEGE IN A FIGHT WITH A SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Wesley College is fighting a school for the deaf,
wanting to take over the land for expansion purposes.
Wesley College in Delaware? And there is a Delaware
School for the Deaf which built a new campus just a couple
of years ago?
What is this all about? It is not the Wesley College
in Delaware but the Wesley college in Australia, which
sits just next to a school for the deaf!
Both Delaware schools - Wesley College and Delaware
School for the Deaf are 40 miles apart whereas the
Australian schools are inches apart.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
hearing people constantly ignoring the interpreter's
request to stop referring to the deaf person as a "he" or as a "she" instead of directly responding to the deaf person
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
The steno for every word must be entered into a stenocaptioner's
personal dictionary in order for it to translate properly. Because
words are written phonetically, a captioner might have multiple ways
to write the same word, and every way must be entered into the
dictionary. Let's take the word "baccalaureate." This is a word
that has five syllables and could be heard a number of ways. Some
examples would be the phonetic sounds of BAK/A/LOR/E/AT or
BAUK/LAUR/YAT or BA/KA/LOR/AT or BAK/LOR/YET. As you can see, there
could be many, many ways to write this word. Even if the captioner
had all four of these ways entered in his or her dictionary, if the
captioner heard it and wrote it as BAK/LAUR/YAUT and that combination
of sounds was not entered in the dictionary, it might translate as
"back lawyer yacht."
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
constantly talking about own's hearing loss to the
point where hearing friends are tired of it!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)
