DeafDigest - 17 February 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, February 17, 2014 -- an actor having communication problems with deaf Superman actor Henry Cavill (future movie - Batman vs. Superman) was in a crowded bar in Detroit with his friend, near a deaf man. This deaf person asked Cavill for a favor, to get him a napkin. Cavill did and said something. The deaf man did not understand. Cavill felt angry and insulted. A friend saw it, and stepped in, and told Cavill that the other person was deaf. People were watching both men. Luckily Cavill apologized, thus preventing a bad incident from getting worse. Possibly the deaf person could not understand because Cavill is from Great Britain where the accent is hard to lipread!     -- a surprise visit at a restaurant Mozzeria is a deaf-owned pizza restaurant in San Francisco. It has been in business for over a year. Just last week this restaurant had a surprise visitor - San Francisco mayor Edwin M. Lee! In addition to enjoying his meal, the mayor discussed deaf issues with the Mozzeria owners. The Mozzeria is not the only deaf-owned restaurant in USA. There are others - http://deafdigest.com/list-of-deaf-owned-restaurants/     -- a popular flea market in Oregon On weekends, many people love to attend flea markets, always looking for bargains. A popular flea market in Eugene, Oregon is the Picc-A-Dilly Flea Market. It attracts hundreds of bargain hunters, looking over stuff at rows of tables. For over 30 years the same man is there behind one table, selling stuff. This man is Bill Smith, and he is deaf. How is he able to communicate with the shoppers? He said he knows them, and they know him, and he knows what they are looking for when they come to his table! He said the place is so noisy that deafness is really an advantage!
