DeafDigest - 17 July 2013

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, July 17, 2013 -- Putin involved with Deaflympics? Vladimir Putin is the president of Russia; he was a former Prime Minister. He is one of the most powerful people in the world. Is he interested in the deaf? Valery Rukhledev, a deaf Russian is running for election as president of the Deaflympics group. What about Putin? He has endorsed Rukhledev for the Deaflympics presidency! It was a big shock that Putin would somehow get involved! Will Rukhledev win? Can't say because he is competing against a Briton and an American.     -- a coffin and rubber ducks in Tucson It was mentioned in DeafDigest several times that the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind is not a happy place right now. People do not like the administration. Gov. Jan Brewer has asked for peace. Things are quiet right now because it is summer. Things will not be quiet when both schools re-open this coming fall. Rubber ducks? A coffin? Rubber ducks means lame duck administration in which everyone hopes it would be. A coffin means the disliked administration will be buried in due time. This was what the students placed on the ground during the protests. This story was mentioned recently in a newspaper. We will see what happens when these schools re-open.     -- H Street loves Gallaudet H Street, NE is about a 15-minutes walk from the Gallaudet campus. For many years Gallaudet students went to H Street to do their shopping and to have fun. H Street became a dead area when the 1968 riots destroyed everything. Times have changed. Many restaurants, many night clubs, many bars, many stores, many shops as well as new condos are in the H Street area. As with the past many years ago Gallaudet students visit H Street - as a result, it has become a neighborhood where hearing people know the deaf, and in fact, hire them to work in these business establishments. The H Street- Gallaudet boom was profiled in a newspaper story.     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 07/14/13 Blue edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 07/14/13 Gold edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
