WONDERING WHY
DeafDigest editor is always wondering why
people are careless about their hearing aids
and CI. They often misplace or lose them,
and cannot afford new hearing aid or new
CI.
Same thing with deaf babies with CI.
These people are careful with their laptops
and iPads but not careful with their
hearing aids and CI.
Always a mystery!

Deaf people love to go out and eat - no matter
if it is low cost fast food restaurant or a
bar that serves hamburgers or fancy restaurants.
These deaf people know which restaurants are
caption-friendly and which are not!
What is a Caption Friendly restaurant? Captions
always turned on restaurant TV sets are
Caption Friendly? Restaurants that never turn on
captions are not Caption Friendly!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
A stenocaptioner does not type words letter by letter. The captioner
strokes whole words and phrases on the steno machine. The words in
the dictionary in a computer-aided transcription program are matched
against those steno strokes to translate them into English. Erroneous
translation can sometimes occur because of other words entered in a
captioner's dictionary.
A captioner might have meant to write the following sentence:
"As the farmer was preparing to plant his crops, he saw he could move
the row bottom any direction."
However, because of words entered in the captioner's dictionary, the
sentence might be displayed as:
"As the farmer was preparing to plant his crops, he saw he could move
the robot omnidirection."

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Tony Wallace, who is deaf, just started work as the law enforcement officer in Noonah, Alaska. This town, near the British Columbia border, has 900 residents. He will also help with the EMS and with the fire department.
editor's note:
Tony was tragically shot to death several
years later while serving summons at a house.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Mark Grisanti, a senator with the New York State
legislation, has been credited by a Buffalo, NY
newspaper for saving the schools for the deaf in
the state - by getting the 4201 Special Schools
funding restored - that the governor wanted to
remove.
editor's note:
schools for the deaf - Fanwood, St Mary's,
Lexington, Rochester, Nill Neck and a couple
others are called "4201 schools" - these
schools are privately run but get state
funding. Politicians have for years wanted
to cut 4201 funding, but have failed to do so.
