Top stories about the deaf:
Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal opposed charging regular
telephone users just a few cents more to subsidize the
deaf relay services, preferring to have the state treasury
pay for it. This led to a legislative debate and the
legislators agreed to dip into the state piggy bank.
Deaf Awareness Day not worth the time and effort!
Says who? Deaf British activist John David Walker
said so. He says that Awareness Day organizers do
not know how to really make hearing people aware
of the needs of the deaf.
The Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind board meeting
took place, but took no action taking into consideration
so much turmoil in recent months.
The Supreme Court says human genes cannot be patented,
yet will ok it if the gene is synthetic. What this means
that if a geneticist creates a synthetic deaf gene, he
can patent it.
Deaf seniors of Rochester may be able to enjoy living
in a senior citizen housing complex if the planned
construction of a residential building takes place
in the area. The time frame is about 12-24 months from
now.

VOCATIONAL OR ACADEMICS IN SCHOOLS FOR THE DEAF
Should our deaf schools stress vocational training
or should it stress academics?
Well, years ago, some schools for the deaf had strong
vocational programs. Deaf students were pushed towards these
vocational programs.
DeafDigest editor just read an obituary of a deaf man
that passed away last week. He worked in a machine shop
for many years after graduating from a deaf school, and
he spent 30 years as the shop foreman, with hearing
machine operators working under him.
So, which is worth more - academics or vocational
training?

NETWORKING IS A WAY TO FIND A DEAF JOB
Do deaf people network with each other to look for
jobs?
Networking means looking for jobs without reading
the employment ads or the internet employment ads.
Networking is:
- asking an old Gallaudet or NTID friend
- asking an important hearing man at a big disability event
- listening to deaf job rumors at a deaf social event
There are other examples of networking.

THE TV GENERATIONS
Recently, the USA Today ran a story on generations of
TV sets. While the story did not mention captions, the
generations are as follows:
1. black and white - no captions
2. color - captions
3. high definition - captions
4. HDTV - captions
What this means is that there were no captions with
the black and white TV generation, and for a long
time, no captions with color TV until late seventies/
early eighties.

Deaf Question of the Week:
Q. Why are hearing aids too expensive?
A. It costs approximately $250 to manufacture a
hearing aid. An audiologist buys that hearing aid
for $1,000 for resale.
Of that $1,000 that is being sold to an audiologist,
$75.00 is for research and development, $250 is
for marketing. The rest is profit for the manufacturer.
The audiologist hikes the price to $2,000 or even $3,000
to recover his $1,000 purchase and for his overhead costs.
This is why we are seeing $3,000 hearing aids!
Unfair? Yes, but this is reality.

Rene Pellerin's corner:
Orientation
I have been walking along the side of the roads in my neighborhood daily.
I walk almost 4 miles a day. There are days that clouds give me a clearer
view of my walk.
There are days when the sun is too bright for my vision.
In bright sun, I must rely on my white cane as my guide to continue
my walk.
One bright sunny day, I crossed the road to go to another street.
The sun was so bright and it was difficult to see, so I let my white cane
guide my way.
I ended up facing a bright white garage door!
I missed the curb and went right on back to one of my neighbor's driveway that lead
to their garage!
I had to re-orient myself to that area to avoid slamming head on onto a
garage door!
Rene's show business is now entering its 3rd year and it
focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
