-- A deaf cafe at a popular city park
A popular park in Derby, United Kingdom is the Arboretum Park.
This park, in the city of 250,000 people, has everything -
picnic areas, athletic facilities, children's playground,
dog runs, gardens, community rooms, etc. When people get
hungry they eat at the park cafe. This cafe is deaf-run.
There seems to be an increasing number of deaf-run
cafes and restaurants in Europe and Asia. DeafDigest
editor visited a deaf-run cafe in Paris.
-- a deaf-blind person watching the World Cup on TV
Everyone follows the World Cup in soccer right now,
rooting for their favorite teams. A deaf-blind person
likes soccer and is able to follow the action on
TV. How? His family and friends built a special
board, placed on a table. When the game starts,
he feels his friends' arms moving around on the
table board. That way, he knows the direction
the ball is being passed or kicked around and
which team has the ball. And when the goal is scored,
they raise their arms and he knows it!
-- a popular TV sign language cartoon for deaf children
There is a popular TV sign language cartoon program,
designed for deaf children. The name of the program is
Two's See Hear. Unfortunately for Americans, it is a
British program. Doing these cartoons is Aardman
Animations, which has a great reputation all over
the world for its outstanding programs. Seems we
do not have a cartoon company in USA doing the
same thing for American deaf children.
