Top stories about the deaf:
The Metro Deaf School, in St Paul, MN,
has paid $7 million to purchase land for
a new campus.
India, some years back, passed a law
sort of similiar to our ADA, yet in one
state (Himachal Pradesh) it is not
enforced. The reason is lack of written
regulations on how to implement the law!
The Norfolk Deaf Association, in Great
Britain, is a social service agency
serving the needs of 11,000 local
deaf clients. This agency was forced
to relocate. This relocation has cost
the agency over $66,000 (in USA funds).
The agency wasn't too happy about this
forced expenditure.
The police officers in New York City will
be giving deaf drivers these communication
cards, in hopes of improving communications
with them.
The MBEYA Zonal Referral Hospital has become
the first medical facility in Tanzania
to employ a full time sign language
interpreter.

This week's ASL video in youtube
A MOVIE HOUSE MANAGER IN A NEWSPAPER STORY
A newspaper had a story about a movie house
manager.
The story said that every day he is busy -
counting ticket sales, counting candy and popcorn
sales, giving duties to his staff, checking
newspapers to make sure movie titles and
times are correct, etc, etc, etc.
The newspaper did not mention one thing -
that he should make sure that captions will
work with the films that he would show
at the movie house.
DeafDigest worried that hearing people
think captions are not important!

SIGN LANGUAGE ON TENNIS COURT
Belgium had two famous hearing tennis players -
Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters.
Belgium has 3 languages - Dutch, French and German.
Justine spoke French. Kim spoke Dutch. They met
each other for the first time at the age of 10.,
When they were on the same doubles team, they
had to communicate with each other in sign language.
Both women are now older and they both can
speak English, and they have stopped signing to
each other!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
I have sometimes been asked the question, "When did captioning start on
TV?"
The captioning that we are now accustomed to on television is what is
called closed captioning. Closed captioning is not visible unless it is
turned on and a decoder is used.
There is also what is known as open captioning. This is captioning that
anyone viewing a broadcast will be able to see, and it cannot be turned
off or hidden from view.
Open captioning is rarely used on television anymore, but the first
program to be captioned was open captioned. On August 5, 1972, Julia
Child, "The French Chef," made history when she taught viewers how to make
a chicken recipe.
This was the first time Americans could view captions on a television
show, and it was a very significant breakthrough for deaf and
hard-of-hearing television viewers.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Doninic Badaracco, Bridgeport, CT, is late deafened

court case. His hearing aid batteries died, and
he did not have replacement batteries with him.
As a result, the judge postponed the case until
