-- a hard of hearing cop in Bellaire, Ohio?
Does the town of Bellaire, Ohio have hard of hearing
cops on its police force? Many small town laws are
weird - and there a weird law in Bellaire. In that town,
truck drivers cannot use engine brakes. Reason is that
it makes noise that bothers people. The law also says
that if the hard of hearing cop with his hearing aid,
catches the truck driver using the engine brake, he
is not allowed to give the truck driver a traffic ticket!
Only hearing cops, not hard of hearing cops, can give
these brake noise truckers these traffic tickets!
-- a powerful hearing man and a powerful deaf issue
Roger Goodell is a powerful man. He is the NFL boss.
A powerful deaf issue is ASL. What is the connection between
both? One of Roger Goodell's past relatives is William
Stokoe, the father of ASL. And what is the irony? Goodell's
attitude was "me hands off" when some deaf groups filed lawsuits
on lack of scoreboard captions (ie Washington Redskins and
Arizona Cardinals lawsuits). Was he aware of Stokoe's big
role in Deaf Culture? At a Stokoe Family Reunion few
years ago, Goodell wrote - I am so proud of my heritage, family
and name. By the way, Goodell's middle initial is S - does that
stand for Stokoe?
-- a famous cartoon character becomes deaf
Snow White is one of the world's most famous cartoon
movies. In the original movie, Snow White was a hearing
character. But this story has been revised to cast
her as a deaf woman! Doing the revising is the Seeing
Voices Montréal and Players, a theatrical group in Canada.
They have renamed the play as Deaf Snow White,
in ASL as well as in English! This play has been sold
out.
