Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Shelley
Bergum, resident of San Francisco Bay area,
that departed us. She was not deaf but fought
for the full rights of the deaf in telecommunications access on behalf of the
California Communications Access Foundation
and of the national deaf relay network.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Ruth
Peterson, a long time Washington, DC area
resident, that departed us. She was an extremely
talented artist, and her editorial cartoons
were featured in the old Dee Cee Eyes, an area
Deaf Community publication.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Roger Scott, or better known as the Deaf Mayor of Delaware Beaches, that departed us. He was
a gregarious fellow that liked to greet
deaf people and make them feel at home.
Years ago he was the confidante of past
deaf leaders - Fred C Schreiber and
Merv Garretson. They liked to bounce
their ideas off Roger for his grass
roots points of view.
Top stories about the deaf:
Magic Morgan is one of the nation's leading deaf
magicians. It is his full time job since after
graduating from Wisconsin School for the Deaf.
He revealed that it was his magician uncle that
taught him everything he needed to know about
this craft!
The town of Hempstead, NY (on Long Island)
will have its town board meetings interpreted.
Is it loud? Is it quiet? There is a new
app coming out on the market that tells
people (both deaf and hearing) the
decibel level of the power drill that
they just walked by.
Arya Mohan is conducting a research -
into how do deaf people think? Do they
think in written language or in sign
language? She is working with researchers
in India.
Hard times for interpreters in Mexico!
That was the focus of a newspaper story -
shortage, lack of training, lack of
fair pay, lack of certification.

THE WAY DEAF COMMUNICATE WITH STRANGERS
Hearing person communicates with hearing
strangers by saying "hi" or "good day" or
something simple.
How do deaf communicate with hearing
strangers? By nodding head with a brief
eye contact - or by waving of the hand.

DEAF NOTES AT HEARING MEETING
An important deaf employee prefers handwritten
notes during a staff meeting, than to have an
interpreter.
He said with notes, he can take it home and
review it in black and white. But with an interpreter,
he depends on his memory. Sometimes his memory is
correct; sometimes his memory is wrong!
http://deafdigest.com/videos/deaf-notes-not-interpreter/
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being told by a deaf person that interpreters are
not necessary and that a note and pad will do!
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
There are a few different methods that court reporters, broadcast
captioners, or CART captioners can use to create and build their main
dictionary and other job-related dictionaries that will be used in
translating the text. Some schools offer prebuilt personal
dictionaries to students, and some software companies offer
dictionary building kits.
Captioners often spend countless hours going through lists of names
and unusual terminology in order to add those words and phrases to
their dictionaries.
Knowing what is in his or her dictionary is one of the most important
pieces of information that a captioner can possess. If a captioner
can anticipate how a word or phrase will translate when it is
written, then the translation will be more accurate.
If a captioner added the name "Norrell" to a dictionary, he or she
might have to be careful if a story discussed how the information was
"neither true nor relevant." If the captioner did not think of
another way to write it, that might translate as the information
being "neither true Norrell vant."
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
Deaf people tap on each other's shoulders to get
attention. This is the acceptable norm in the
Deaf Society - yet when a deaf person accidentally
taps on the shoulder of a hearing person then
it may lead to problems!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
Deaf people in USA are lucky. They do not live in
Russia. There is no "ADA" in Russia, meaning
lack of services such as interpreters, video
relay, deaf devices, etc.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Angela who? It was announced over the Internet
that Angela will be sign singing the National
Anthem at the Super Bowl.
The problem is DeafDigest does not know
Angela's last name, hence this question
"Angela who?"
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Deaf pilots cannot work on a commercial airplane because
of tower radio communications. Josh Mech, a Wisconsin deaf
man outfitted with a double CI, was given OK by the Federal
Aviation Administration on his career plan to become a
commercial pilot.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Deaf people sign petitions asking for changes to
make lives easier for them (employment, captions,
interpreters, stronger ADA regulations, etc).
Worth it?
A deaf activist says it is a waste of time because
governments just don't listen!
