Street performers such as dancers, musicians, poem recitals, artists - are a strong part of the city culture, be it in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Rome .....and Austin, Texas! These street performers are hearing. But it is in Austin where we have a deaf street performer. The deaf person is Cruz Lane, who gives street dances, mixing ASL with music. A story on him was written up in a newspaper article. .. At the Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID), students take vocational classes for careers in automotive maintenance, construction, dental labs, computers, etc. For the first time, these vocational students are able to take classes on the SWCID campus instead of having to travel to the main campus at Howard College. Other students are also able to earn academic credits for transfers to 4-year colleges. A COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE BEFORE THE TTY The first TTY was manufactured in 1964, but the TTY network did not grow until the early 1970's. We, the deaf, had a good communications device, but it was not too popular. The high cost of leasing the device prevented many deaf people from using it. The device was the Electrowriter. It was almost like a TTY, except that the caller would write out his message on an electronic pad with his electronic pen. The Electrowriter on the other end of the telephone line would copy the handwritten message. And communications would go on back and forth. Yes, if the writer had a lousy penmanship, it would be hard to read the message! Gallaudet University used this Electrowriter network in a few offices on the campus. The popularity of the TTY immediately killed the Electrowriter. ACTORS' BAD ASL Years ago Marlee Matlin, in a speech at an event that was honoring her, said that Hollywood actors are capable of playing any role. This is the reason why we see some scenes where actors sign out ASL as part of a short dialogue. Does it matter to these producers that the actors' ASL signing is pretty much bad. No, it does not matter to them. Said a Hollywood spokesperson: Learning skills for a role is hardly rare in Hollywood Why not just hire a deaf actor for a scene that requires some ASL signing? AVOIDING A 999 EMERGENCY CALL A deaf person, living in London, witnessed an accident. And while he had his text pager with him, he avoided making a 999 emergency call (same as 911 in USA). Instead he had to run and look for a hearing person and requested that an emergency call be placed. Why did he refuse? He said: I was too much of a hassle to explain to the 999 operator that an accident took place The British authorities are trying to find a way to allow the deaf to dial 999 without facing hassles. A PUZZLING NEWSPAPER STORY Some time ago there was a newspaper story that said a deaf man, in West Virginia, was unable to go to college because of his deafness. This is puzzling. Gallaudet and RIT have been in existence for years. And as for hearing colleges, which may or may not have support services, determined deaf individuals have made do on their own. So, for a newspaper story to say deafness prevented a person from attending college, is, indeed, puzzling! Possibly, there is more to the story than what was being written. MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF - Darth Vader, famous fictional character in Star Wars (continued from last week) it was learned that the Darth Vader character, played by David Prowse, is a citizen of Great Britain and is known for defending the rights of the deaf. He was in Omaha, Nebraska on a trip and visited Nebraska School for the Deaf. Because he was big and tall and strong, he gave a powerlifting demonstration which excited the kids at the school. The newspapers gave the school a lot of ink as a result of the visit. (this school has since then closed its doors) David Prose does not know sign language but loved the deaf just the same. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? complained an interpreter: my team interpreter is absent with no advance notice, leaving me to interpret the entire proceedings all by myself if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series In order to become advocates for quality captioning, we must understand the differences between good and bad captioning. Some people may think that some captioners are very bad spellers. However, occasionally the problem is the result of a technical glitch rather than the captioner inputting the wrong words. If the captions have many missing or wrong letters or have many nonsense symbols, it could be a poor video signal or some sort of transmission or reception problem that is causing the problem with the captions. If you have a problem with garbled captions on a particular show, try viewing the captions on a different television in your home. You could ask a neighbor to check the captions in their home. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Engineers are not addressing the needs of the deaf in elevators during high-rise emergencies. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers hosted a 3-day workshop recently in Atlanta to discuss ways elevators could be used by emergency personnel and building occupants in case of disasters. Not a single mention of deaf occupants was addressed at the workshop. Elevators, you know, are just like cars. They break down and what if deaf occupants are stranded? .... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: In Texas, deaf people struggle, trying to reach 211 line which is used to request general assistance (food, shelter, rent payments, utility payments, etc). The state Department of Public Safety has a web site that gives advice and tips for the deaf that need assistance. This web site is doing exactly what 211 is supposed to do.
