This high ranking bureaucrat with the government in the Philippines always made it a point to hire the deaf in the government and private sectors Top stories about the deaf: Two efforts by legislators to fund the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind have failed! Legislators just can't agree on how much to fund. The province of Ontario has given The Bob Rumball Associations for the Deaf a grant to develop videos on Health and Safety for deaf employees to follow. Two Japanese credit card companies - Sumitomo Mitsui Card and JCB have agreed to accept video relay calls from the deaf that want to discuss their credit card matters. Here in USA, the deaf people are often hassled in their efforts to contact credit card companies via relay services. There was a story about the Sericulture Project, an agency in Cuba, that helps the deaf with their social service needs. Ofcom, an agency in Great Britain which is like our FCC, has pledged to increase hours of sign language on TV news. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- For postings, announcements and employment ad rates, please email mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com (updated every Monday) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- READ WHAT THEY SAY Unlock the phone with CapTelŽ Captioned Telephone! You don't have a key with you. You use your flashlight at the window to tell the deaf person to come out and open the door for you. This deaf person is angry about it. But the computer has problems. You ask the man from the computer repair center to come and fix the problem. This computer man gets angry and is gesturing with fingers pointing. You wonder if the computer man is angry at you or if he is angry at the computer. COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Another common stacking type of problem occurs with punctuation. Many captioners write a period as "FPLT" and a comma as "RBGS" although some of the captioning companies are recommending new strokes for the punctuation. The "FPLT" and "RBGS" are written with the right hand only, and this can make it easy to have a stroke with the left hand end up in the same stroke.  If you see something like "I went to the store. was Saturday," that actually is a stacking mistake and should be translated as "I went to the store. It was Saturday." It is written as "T" by many stenocaptioners, and that "T" ended up in the same stroke with the period because of stacking. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF hearing people thinking deafness is the worst thing that could ever happen to them! (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- For postings, announcements and employment ad rates, please email mailto:barry@deafdigest.com for Special Notes, go to the bottom of the Gold section -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- DeafLaw He said did this. Cops said he did that. The deaf man said he put his hands up; the cops said he reached for his gun. Who is right? This was the issue raised by the family of a deaf man in California shot to death by cops during a confrontation. The parents of the deaf son has filed a lawsuit for that reason. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: Ryan Ketchner, the deaf pitcher in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system, was supposed to be having a break out season and possibly be making his major league debut soon. What happened? He had a Tommy John surgery last November and is now rehabbing his pitching arm. Because of the surgery he was placed on the disabled list and told not to pitch until spring 2006. The doctor told him he should not have problems pitching next season. (editor's note: Ryan never made it to the majors; he made it as far as AAA ball before washing out because of arm ailments. He tried a come back two summers ago in independent ball but it was not successful) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: University of Bristol (UK) is trying to close up for good their Center of Deaf Studies. This move has upset people all over the world, and they have been pummeling the Bristol administration with angry emails. University of Bristol is where Paddy Laird, who coined the phrase - deafhood - teaches. (editor's note: despite efforts, this center closed up permanently) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: two stories - same day (Friday) first story says that if a deaf baby is not outfitted with a CI within six months of birth, then all is "lost" as far as speech discrimination skills are concerned second story is that Vint Cerf, the deaf Father of the Internet, gave a speech saying that all deaf people need to be implanted. Question is - would implantation be worth the money for a 70-year old deaf man with no speech and hearing skills? Cerf, despite his deafness, functions 100 percent as a hearing person. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- * YOU COULD PLACE YOUR PAID EMPLOYMENT ADS IN THIS SECTION * on a per-subscriber basis, the DeafDigest ad rates are the best in the nation. * For more information, send E-mail to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- - EXCITING EMPLOYMENT OPENINGS AT GLAD !! - *  Deputy Director - Los Angeles, CA *  Staff Interpreter - Los Angeles, CA *  Staff Interpreter (2 positions available) - Riverside, CA *  Job Developer/Interpreter -  West Covina, CA To learn more about the above positions at GLAD, please go to our website: http://www.gladinc.org If interested for any of these positions then please submit resume and application to: Human Resources Manager Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc. 2222 Laverna Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90041 V/TDD: (323) 550-4207 Fax #: (323) 550-4204 E-mail: mailto:gladhr@gladinc.org -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- deadline - job closing date - May 21 job vacancy Assistant Principal Florida School for the Deaf and Blind St Augustine, FL POSITION TITLE:  Assistant Principal POSITION TYPE:  Board of Trustees (Administrator) DEPARTMENT:  Deaf Middle School FSDB SALARY RANGE - 230 days (Includes summer):  $58,030.39 to Negotiable.  This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.
