Not sure why he said that - rich families can have deaf children as well as low income families!   -- half silent, half talkie movie with captions Shown on TV recently was "Weary River" produced in 1929. At that time silent films were going out and talkie films were coming in. To bridge both generations, this film was half-silent and half-talkie. Shown on TV was this modified film with captions thrown in with these silents captions! In other words, for each scene, one can see captions and then see the silents captions.
