DeafDigest - 18 November 2015

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, November 18, 2015 -- something new in a movie Actress Tessa Thompson, who is hard of hearing, is in a new movie - Creed, which is about boxing. This movie is showing something new - a hearing aid! For many movies, actors hide their hearing aids, but Tessa is proud to show her hearing aid and the audience can see it. She has a lifelong hearing loss, it is getting worse as she gets older. She said it is about time Hollywood show the real disabled actors instead of faking about it. A picture of her is at: http://35.182.75.222/movie-star-with-hearing-loss/     -- the nation's toughest captioning law What would be the nation's toughest captioning law? Easy answer - FCC's own rules. Not quite! It is Portland, Oregon. The Portland commissioners are discussing a tough proposal - which would require captions at bars, hospitals, barbershops, dental offices. A group of deaf people is pushing for the law - because they have asked waiters and bartenders to turn on the captions only to be refused. It is hoped that once Portland passes this law, hundreds of American cities will copy it.     -- Deaf Bridge may shut down vehicle traffic The Zero Bridge (actually Zorr Bridge) in Srinagar, Kashmir has been closed to traffic since 2010, because its wood structure was too weak to handle heavy vehicle traffic. The municipal government has renovated the bridge, but wants it as a walkaway instead of cars and trucks. Fierce debate is going on right now. It is often called Deaf Bridge - because the contractor who built the bridge years ago was deaf. Zorr, in Kashmir language, means deaf.     Latest deaf jobs: http://deafdigest.com/category/jobs/ or click on "jobs" past Mid-Week & morning editions: http://deafdigest.com/category/mid-week-news/ 11/15/15 Blue and Gold editions at: http://deafdigest.com/newsletters/
