- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
A recent deaf and hard of hearing travel tour involved
nearly 50 tourists from 10 nations, all of them speaking
different languages - but able to communicate with each
other! The group toured Poland. Hosting the tour was the
European Federation of Hard of Hearing People. It included
two CART operators, which made it possible for all of them
to communicate. Just before the tour ended and everyone
was to go home, one event did not need CART operators -
clicking beers with each other.
Eriko Hiratsuka, a deaf Japanese woman in Tokyo, has received her law degree and is now studying for her bar exam. For the time being she is working at the
Silent Café, where everyone uses use sign language. She does not sign well but is learning and is getting by via lipreading. Once she passes the bar exam, her
code is to help the deaf with their legal issues.

The next Deaflympics may take place in Budapest (Hungary) in 2013, depending on how things work
out. Ankara (Turkey) will host the Deaflympics
in 2017. Do keep in mind the past winter Deaflympics was canceled. DeafDigest hopes the next two Deaflympics will be roaring successes.

What is the truth behind hearing aid prices? Hearing aid parts cost $100, and manufactured in China, a low cost labor nation, end up costing over $2,500 in USA! Why? The hearing aid manufacturers are saying it is Research and Development (R&D) costs that is getting higher and higher. Why R & D? Because consumers want smaller and smaller hearing aids - and it requires
a lot of research and development to come up with tiny aids, that one cannot see but is extremely powerful. These result in higher costs even though the parts are cheap!
- Monday September 12th
A group in China is mounting a campaign in China to allow the
disabled, the deaf included, to become teachers. Their proposal
has been given to the Ministry of Education to eliminate
discriminatory rules that have blocked the deaf and the disabled
from entering the teaching profession.
- Tuesday September 13th
The EEOC is slapping a job discrimination lawsuit against
Miles Kimball Co (Wisconsin) for discriminating against a deaf employee. The company sent the deaf employee to a job training workshop but refused to provide her with an interpreter despite
her request. And later on, the company fired her.
- Wednesday September 14th
It was mentioned a while ago that a deaf trackster in
Australia was turned down in his request for a visual
starter system during a national track and field meet.
The national athletic organization backed off and
granted his request for a visual starter. But if he
runs internationally, then the International Amateur
Athletics Federation would not allow it.
- Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
The Neema Crafts Gallery Café in Iringa, Tanzania,
where almost all employees are deaf, has been chosen as the best British restaurant outside of the UK.
The restaurant owners said he wanted to see the deaf
of Tanzania be gainfully employed.

TRUTH IN JOB DISCRIMINATION CLAIMS
It happens many times. A deaf person is fired from
a job. He is angry and files a lawsuit accusing the
company of discriminating against the deaf.
Is it true? In many, many cases, it is true, but
again, in many, many other cases it is not true!
A deaf person may have messed up badly on his job
and was fired for that reason - but he tells everyone
that he is being discriminated against!
A hearing person may have also messed up on the job,
and is fired - but he does not claim discrimination!

What is the biggest fear among CI users

It is a CI recall. Let us compare it with an
automobile recall.
If your car is recalled because of a defective
part, you just go to the dealer and wait for the
part to be changed.
But if your CI is recalled, it means having to
go back to the CI physician, which is a worse hassle.
99.9 percent of CIs are fine. It is the 0.01
percent that scares many CI users.

QUESTIONS TO ASK ASHLEY FIOLEK
Ashley Fiolek, who is deaf, is one of the world's
best professional motocross racers, with a couple of
world championship titles to her credit.
A writer for a high profile magazine is working
on a feature story on her.
This writer contacted DeafDigest editor, wanting to
know if questions by the deaf are the same or different
when asked by the hearing.
DeafDigest editor replied:
Deaf questions are the same as Hearing questions, and
there are always smart questions and always dumb
questions!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As the new school year has begun, when I explain to people what I do
for a job, once again people continue to ask me if I am eligible to
receive college credit for the classes where I provide CART.
Because many CART providers will find themselves working in college
classrooms throughout the country, I thought I would clarify this
again for everyone.
Unfortunately, CART providers cannot participate in the class. They
are there to provide a service. It would be against the professional
ethics of the National Court Reporters Association to be an active
participant in the class and to provide the services of a CART
provider.
According to Article VIII of the NCRA CART Consumer Bill of Rights,
which is "Staying in Role," "CART consumers have a right to expect
CART providers to refrain from commenting, interjecting, advising, or
in any way becoming involved in the assignment outside the role of
communication access."
CART providers review the class materials to enter terms and proper
names for the course into their computerized dictionaries, but they
don't have to take the tests or do the homework.
If a CART provider wants to receive college credit, he or she must
enroll in the class individually and participate in the class, do the
homework, write the papers, and take the tests. It would be a
conflict to provide CART for someone else at the same time.
A TOTAL CONTROL OF HEARING UMPIRES BY A DEAF UMPIRE!
We have many deaf referees and deaf umpires in all
sports - baseball, basketball, football, wrestling,
soccer, etc, etc.
Do our deaf referees totally control hearing
referees?
Not really because these referees work together
to control the game. But in the case of the late
Maurice Potter, a deaf man, who was a long time
baseball umpire in Minnesota, he totally controlled
the other hearing umpires in every game.
When he is introduced to a new hearing umpire that
he never worked before, he would write down on his
note pad:
no balks!
Why? As a former deaf umpire in baseball explained
to DeafDigest editor, if a hearing umpire shouted out
balk and waved the runner to the next base, Potter,
because of his deafness, may not hear it and it may
lead to confusion. So, only Potter himself, and no other
umpire, could call balk.
Balks, however, are extremely rare in baseball.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED
There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.
True or false?
DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:
A deaf yachtsman from South Africa, shielded all his life
from the deaf, was invited for dinner at home of a deaf American,
on one of his American port stops. It was the first time
in his life that he saw a group of deaf people at an event.
Not able to understand signs, much less understanding
simple hearing gestures, he was quite lost at the event
hosted in his honor!

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
Andrew J Oxenham, University of Minnesota psychologist
and an authority on hearing aid issues, said that Psychoacoustics is fundamental and that it is used
in hearing aid and CI design. His comments were written up
in a recent New York Times article.

The Deaf and the Law:
It was all over the news that the state has the right to
close the South Dakota School for the Deaf, the appellate
court ruled against a group of parents that wanted to keep
the school open. What was not so well known was that
the litigants did not start the Due Process, in which IDEA
requires. Instead of going through the Due Process steps
they jumpstarted the whole thing by going to the court,
a strategical move that backfired.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
In the aftermath of the attacks at the WTC and the
Pentagon, already surfacing over the Internet are many
stories of how many of our deaf friends - from Gallaudet,
from NTID, at the Pentagon, at the WTC and others - have
survived the ordeal.
As far as DEAFDIGEST is concerned, there were no known
casualties among our deaf and hard of hearing friends.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
This just out now - the Gallaudet football team
finally won its first NCAA-III football game in 15
years.
Gallaudet defeated SUNY-Maritime 18-13 today.
Gallaudet has won football games in recent years
but it was against club teams, junior varsity teams,
military base teams and semi-pro teams.
Even during these dream 7-2 seasons in 1998 and 9-0
last season, none were against NCAA-III teams.

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
A recent deaf and hard of hearing travel tour involved
nearly 50 tourists from 10 nations, all of them speaking
different languages - but able to communicate with each
other! The group toured Poland. Hosting the tour was the
European Federation of Hard of Hearing People. It included
two CART operators, which made it possible for all of them
to communicate. Just before the tour ended and everyone
was to go home, one event did not need CART operators -
clicking beers with each other.
Eriko Hiratsuka, a deaf Japanese woman in Tokyo, has received her law degree and is now studying for her bar exam. For the time being she is working at the
Silent Café, where everyone uses use sign language. She does not sign well but is learning and is getting by via lipreading. Once she passes the bar exam, her
code is to help the deaf with their legal issues.

The next Deaflympics may take place in Budapest (Hungary) in 2013, depending on how things work
out. Ankara (Turkey) will host the Deaflympics
in 2017. Do keep in mind the past winter Deaflympics was canceled. DeafDigest hopes the next two Deaflympics will be roaring successes.

What is the truth behind hearing aid prices? Hearing aid parts cost $100, and manufactured in China, a low cost labor nation, end up costing over $2,500 in USA! Why? The hearing aid manufacturers are saying it is Research and Development (R&D) costs that is getting higher and higher. Why R & D? Because consumers want smaller and smaller hearing aids - and it requires
a lot of research and development to come up with tiny aids, that one cannot see but is extremely powerful. These result in higher costs even though the parts are cheap!
- Monday September 12th
A group in China is mounting a campaign in China to allow the
disabled, the deaf included, to become teachers. Their proposal
has been given to the Ministry of Education to eliminate
discriminatory rules that have blocked the deaf and the disabled
from entering the teaching profession.
- Tuesday September 13th
The EEOC is slapping a job discrimination lawsuit against
Miles Kimball Co (Wisconsin) for discriminating against a deaf employee. The company sent the deaf employee to a job training workshop but refused to provide her with an interpreter despite
her request. And later on, the company fired her.
- Wednesday September 14th
It was mentioned a while ago that a deaf trackster in
Australia was turned down in his request for a visual
starter system during a national track and field meet.
The national athletic organization backed off and
granted his request for a visual starter. But if he
runs internationally, then the International Amateur
Athletics Federation would not allow it.
- Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
The Neema Crafts Gallery Café in Iringa, Tanzania,
where almost all employees are deaf, has been chosen as the best British restaurant outside of the UK.
The restaurant owners said he wanted to see the deaf
of Tanzania be gainfully employed.

TRUTH IN JOB DISCRIMINATION CLAIMS
It happens many times. A deaf person is fired from
a job. He is angry and files a lawsuit accusing the
company of discriminating against the deaf.
Is it true? In many, many cases, it is true, but
again, in many, many other cases it is not true!
A deaf person may have messed up badly on his job
and was fired for that reason - but he tells everyone
that he is being discriminated against!
A hearing person may have also messed up on the job,
and is fired - but he does not claim discrimination!

What is the biggest fear among CI users

It is a CI recall. Let us compare it with an
automobile recall.
If your car is recalled because of a defective
part, you just go to the dealer and wait for the
part to be changed.
But if your CI is recalled, it means having to
go back to the CI physician, which is a worse hassle.
99.9 percent of CIs are fine. It is the 0.01

QUESTIONS TO ASK ASHLEY FIOLEK
Ashley Fiolek, who is deaf, is one of the world's
best professional motocross racers, with a couple of
world championship titles to her credit.
A writer for a high profile magazine is working
on a feature story on her.
This writer contacted DeafDigest editor, wanting to
know if questions by the deaf are the same or different
when asked by the hearing.
DeafDigest editor replied:
Deaf questions are the same as Hearing questions, and
there are always smart questions and always dumb

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As the new school year has begun, when I explain to people what I do
for a job, once again people continue to ask me if I am eligible to
receive college credit for the classes where I provide CART.
Because many CART providers will find themselves working in college
classrooms throughout the country, I thought I would clarify this
again for everyone.
Unfortunately, CART providers cannot participate in the class. They
are there to provide a service. It would be against the professional
ethics of the National Court Reporters Association to be an active
participant in the class and to provide the services of a CART
provider.
According to Article VIII of the NCRA CART Consumer Bill of Rights,
which is "Staying in Role," "CART consumers have a right to expect
CART providers to refrain from commenting, interjecting, advising, or
in any way becoming involved in the assignment outside the role of
communication access."
CART providers review the class materials to enter terms and proper
names for the course into their computerized dictionaries, but they
don't have to take the tests or do the homework.
If a CART provider wants to receive college credit, he or she must
enroll in the class individually and participate in the class, do the
homework, write the papers, and take the tests. It would be a
conflict to provide CART for someone else at the same time.
A TOTAL CONTROL OF HEARING UMPIRES BY A DEAF UMPIRE!
We have many deaf referees and deaf umpires in all
sports - baseball, basketball, football, wrestling,
soccer, etc, etc.
Do our deaf referees totally control hearing
referees?
Not really because these referees work together
to control the game. But in the case of the late
Maurice Potter, a deaf man, who was a long time
baseball umpire in Minnesota, he totally controlled
the other hearing umpires in every game.
When he is introduced to a new hearing umpire that
he never worked before, he would write down on his
note pad:
no balks!
Why? As a former deaf umpire in baseball explained
to DeafDigest editor, if a hearing umpire shouted out
balk and waved the runner to the next base, Potter,
because of his deafness, may not hear it and it may
lead to confusion. So, only Potter himself, and no other
umpire, could call balk.
Balks, however, are extremely rare in baseball.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED
There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.
True or false?
DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:
A deaf yachtsman from South Africa, shielded all his life
from the deaf, was invited for dinner at home of a deaf American,
on one of his American port stops. It was the first time
in his life that he saw a group of deaf people at an event.
Not able to understand signs, much less understanding
simple hearing gestures, he was quite lost at the event
hosted in his honor!

Andrew J Oxenham, University of Minnesota psychologist
and an authority on hearing aid issues, said that Psychoacoustics is fundamental and that it is used
in hearing aid and CI design. His comments were written up
in a recent New York Times article.

The Deaf and the Law:
It was all over the news that the state has the right to
close the South Dakota School for the Deaf, the appellate
court ruled against a group of parents that wanted to keep
the school open. What was not so well known was that
the litigants did not start the Due Process, in which IDEA
requires. Instead of going through the Due Process steps
they jumpstarted the whole thing by going to the court,
a strategical move that backfired.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
In the aftermath of the attacks at the WTC and the
Pentagon, already surfacing over the Internet are many
stories of how many of our deaf friends - from Gallaudet,
from NTID, at the Pentagon, at the WTC and others - have
survived the ordeal.
As far as DEAFDIGEST is concerned, there were no known
casualties among our deaf and hard of hearing friends.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
This just out now - the Gallaudet football team
finally won its first NCAA-III football game in 15
years.
Gallaudet defeated SUNY-Maritime 18-13 today.
Gallaudet has won football games in recent years
but it was against club teams, junior varsity teams,
military base teams and semi-pro teams.
Even during these dream 7-2 seasons in 1998 and 9-0
last season, none were against NCAA-III teams.
