-- A TV decoder only shows Chinese captions!
Someone bought a TV decoder and hooked it up to a TV.
The captions were in Chinese, not in English! DeafDigest
wonders who would buy these old fashioned decoders?
Even a deaf agency tried to give away these new decoders
for free and no one wanted them! Anyway why Chinese?
Maybe a high tech mystery. The buyer was not able to
change it from Chinese to English.
-- Confessions of an interpreter that lied!
A local TV station showed a program about a class at
a deaf school. The teacher interpreted for a 8-year
old girl that was interviewed. The teacher changed
the girl's answers to make things look good. For the
question - is your mother with you now? The child
signed "she is in jail" and the teacher changed it to
"she could not make it." For the question - did you
like our TV program last night? Her response in signs
was inappropriate, so the teacher changed it to
"I liked everything on the program."
-- a big irony behind the RID birth in 1968
The Registry of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
was born in 1968 at Muncie, Indiana. The chairperson in that
first RID meeting was Dr. Edgar Lowell who was not deaf. He
was the Director of the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles.
This clinic teaches oralism. How did Lowell get involved with
RID in sign language interpreting? It was just a job with him,
no matter if it was oralism or ASL! This is one of the biggest
ironies in Deaf History.
