-- most important deaf person behind movie captions
Who is the most important deaf person behind movie
captions? Someone from NAD or AgBell or HLAA or ALDA?
Nope. It is John Waldo, a deaf attorney, who works with
two organizations in Washington and Oregon. He
reached out to the National Association of Theater
Owners and suggested a power meeting
with them and these national deaf organizations.
It was not an easy meeting, because disagreement
was open captions versus closed captions, and
the closed captions won. Bad feelings still
continue but at least these movie houses have
captions.
-- a big surprise with these ASL Santa Clauses
more and more shopping malls hire ASL signing
Santa Clauses to communicate with deaf kids.
What is the big surprise? A mall in California
said very shy hearing kids and autistic kids
come to these ASL Santa Clauses to share their
gift wish lists! Not sure if these Santas
switch to voice or continue with their ASL with
these hearing kids.
-- the deaf of Cuba
Obama is trying to re-establish normal relationships
with Cuba. If and when this is done, then many
travelers would want to tour Cuba. Deaf tourists,
too. Will deaf tourists be bumping into deaf
Cubans that roam the streets, asking for money?
This was what one hearing traveler complained -
bumping into a deaf person on the streets of
Havana, begging for money. Do Cubans take
care of their deaf people? Hope so.
