It is something like a headphone presenting acoustic maps of sights (trees, streets, cars, people, etc). The blind person would be able to navigate his way around after hearing these "acoustic images." A team from University of Laguna in Spain is working on that project Bottom line is - how is this going to help the deaf-blind? .. We may be seeing a new trend that would benefit world travelers that are deaf. It is an on-line travel guide that comes up with everything, meaning scripts and imagery. It is supposed to help the deaf pre-plan their tours. A requirement is a credit card that would allow the deaf travelers to download these guides and to pick the sites. A tab would be run on the credit card. DeafDigest fears that clicking errors would create hassles with the credit card companies and the tour operators. Or even those that change their minds after selecting their paid-for tours. .. Over the years we've had a few deaf professional dancers. One of them, the late Sam Edwards gave a dance performance on TV, way back in the seventies. What about Europe? There is a new deaf dancer in Armenia, of all the places - Hayk Hobosyan. Hayk is now a lead dancer of his troupe that performs at concerts in Armenia. A deaf person often grows up in a hearing family without knowing secrets such as a brother being arrested, a close cousin was actually adopted, etc, etc. Hearing family members know about these secrets but they often do not share these with the deaf family member. But it is always that many years later they will tell him the secrets that they never told him in the past. Tyson Gillies is deaf and is a professional baseball player. He recently took part at the recent minor all star game between the best minor league players from USA and the best from the world. After the game, a newspaper reporter wrote: he will speak to the National Association of the Deaf in Seattle This statement was puzzling. Tyson is a Canadian, and why would he be speaking to the NAD? And especially at Seattle? The next NAD Conference takes place in Philadelphia in 2010. Washington State Association of the Deaf is one of the NAD state chapters, but this group is meeting next month at Vancouver. Sigh! Some newspaper statements make no sense. PASSING A HEARING TEST Years ago a deaf person took a hearing test, to prove his deafness at the army draft board. He passed despite not hearing anything at all. The army officer said that if the deaf person could hear thunder, see lightning and feel rain, then he "passed" the test. This deaf person, however, was not drafted at all because of his other medical issues! AN ITEM ON THE CHECKLIST When people come up with something new that helps to improve the way we live, there is an item that is always missing. This item is: will it work with the deaf? We are always reading in the newspapers of inventions, innovations and ideas. And just almost all of them do not work with the deaf! For remote CART, the student would bring a laptop into the classroom and connect via the Internet with a CART provider who is located at some other location. There would be a microphone or microphones in the classroom so that the CART provider could hear what was going on over a phone line or Internet connection. One of the advantages of remote CART is that it is sometimes more affordable because you do not have the travel time and setup involved as you would with onsite CART. If a student is moving from classroom to classroom, sometimes remote CART is easier because the CART provider does not have to move all of the CART equipment from one location to another location. Everything onsite is done by the student, so there is no outside person involved onsite. Another advantage is if you do not have an experienced CART provider in your area, any CART provider anywhere in the country could cover the assignment. DeafADA Issue of the Week: Always when the deaf travel, there are issues (interpreters, captions, signalers, etc). Keep in mind ADA regulations do not apply when travelers are not on American soil or on American waters.
