News of the Week:

A device that is being developed is supposed to
help the blind.
It is something like a headphone presenting
acoustic maps of sights (trees, streets, cars,
people, etc). The blind person would be able to
navigate his way around after hearing these
"acoustic images."
A team from University of Laguna in Spain
is working on that project
Bottom line is - how is this going to help
the deaf-blind?

..

We may be seeing a new trend that would benefit
world travelers that are deaf.
It is an on-line travel guide that comes up with
everything, meaning scripts and imagery. It is
supposed to help the deaf pre-plan their tours.
A requirement is a credit card that would allow
the deaf travelers to download these guides and
to pick the sites. A tab would be run on the
credit card.
DeafDigest fears that clicking errors would
create hassles with the credit card companies
and the tour operators. Or even those that
change their minds after selecting their
paid-for tours.

..

Over the years we've had a few deaf professional
dancers. One of them, the late Sam Edwards gave
a dance performance on TV, way back in the seventies.
What about Europe? There is a new deaf dancer
in Armenia, of all the places - Hayk Hobosyan.
Hayk is now a lead dancer of his troupe that
performs at concerts in Armenia. He specializes
in hip hop, break dancing and Latino.

HEARING TIGER AND DEAF TIGER
When we mention Tiger, almost all of us will
know it is Tiger Woods, the most famous golfer
in the world.
What about Deaf Tiger? Yes. Tiger Holland,
was a deaf man in Australia. No, he was not
a golfer, but he was involved with horse
racing for many years as jockey and trainer.
When he died last year, Australian horse
racing people gave him great honors at his
funeral.
He did not know ASL (Australian Sign
Language).

THE DEAF AT HEARING FAMILY REUNIONS
When a deaf member of a family is invited to
a reunion, he is often surprised when family members
tell him secrets he never knew in the past.
A deaf person often grows up in a hearing family
without knowing secrets such as a brother being
arrested, a close cousin was actually adopted,
etc, etc.
Hearing family members know about these secrets
but they often do not share these with the deaf
family member.
But it is always that many years later they will
tell him the secrets that they never told him in
the past.
Are these hearing people afraid that "bad family
news" is not good for the deaf to know?

BASEBALL, NAD AND WSAD?
Tyson Gillies is deaf and is a professional
baseball player. He recently took part at the recent
minor all star game between the best minor league
players from USA and the best from the world.
After the game, a newspaper reporter wrote:

he will speak to the National Association of the Deaf
in Seattle

This statement was puzzling. Tyson is a Canadian,
and why would he be speaking to the NAD? And
especially at Seattle?
The next NAD Conference takes place in Philadelphia
in 2010. Washington State Association of the Deaf is
one of the NAD state chapters, but this group is
meeting next month at Vancouver.
Sigh! Some newspaper statements make no sense.

HEARING AID DEALER CREDENTIALS
You name the profession - barber, auto mechanic,
accountant, etc - and these professionals have
credentials to show for.
What about hearing aid dispensers or hearing
aid dealers?
There is a national organization, called
the National Board for Certification in Hearing
Instrument Sciences. It provides certificates
for qualified hearing aid people.
Next time you are shopping around for a hearing
aid, do ask for the certificate. If the dispenser
does not have it or gives excuses, just walk away!

PASSING A HEARING TEST

Years ago a deaf person took a hearing test,
to prove his deafness at the army draft board.
He passed despite not hearing anything
at all.
The army officer said that if the deaf
person could hear thunder, see lightning
and feel rain, then he "passed" the test.
This deaf person, however, was not drafted
at all because of his other medical issues!

AN ITEM ON THE CHECKLIST
When people come up with something new that
helps to improve the way we live, there is an
item that is always missing.
   This item is:

will it work with the deaf?

We are always reading in the newspapers of
inventions, innovations and ideas. And just almost
all of them do not work with the deaf!

DEAF ISSUES

(short series; based on comments by educators
and deaf service professionals)

most school districts lack teachers that know how
to work with the deaf

(series to continue until it runs out)

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

As you are considering whether to use remote CART or onsite
CART in a high school or university setting, you will
find that remote CART also has many advantages.

For remote CART, the student would bring a laptop into
the classroom and connect via the Internet with a CART
provider who is located at some other location. There
would be a microphone or microphones in the classroom so
that the CART provider could hear what was going on over
a phone line or Internet connection.

One of the advantages of remote CART is that it is sometimes
more affordable because you do not have the travel time and
setup involved as you would with onsite CART.

If a student is moving from classroom to classroom, sometimes
remote CART is easier because the CART provider does not have
to move all of the CART equipment from one location to
another location. Everything onsite is done by the student,
so there is no outside person involved onsite.

Another advantage is if you do not have an experienced CART
provider in your area, any CART provider anywhere in the country
could cover the assignment. It could be especially helpful in
a rural area where there are no CART providers.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF A MAINSTREAMED PROGRAM IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT?

program manager

(in many school districts we would expect a principal,
or a director or a coordinator or a supervisor or someone
with an appropriate title that would direct their mainstreamed
programs; some districts are different and this reflects in
a startling title above. Be surprised or shocked every week

The Deaf and the Law

location:
Virginia

case:
a deaf man and a hearing woman wanted to get married.
Judge said no, because she wanted to hear the deaf man
speak out his vows by voice and not by sign.

result:
the bickering between the judge, the couple and the court room
clerks went on back and forth for a while before the judge
relented and approved their marriage.

comment:
this incident took place near Staunton, Virginia. One would
think that people that live near Staunton would be familiar
with the deaf. Apparently this was not the case.

..

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

Always when the deaf travel, there are issues
(interpreters, captions, signalers, etc).
Keep in mind ADA regulations do not apply
when travelers are not on American soil or on
American waters.
The cruise operators are always saying:

we are not registered under American flag and
therefore ADA regulations do not apply to us

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Lack of vitamins causing hearing loss? This is what
a magazine "New Choices: Living Even Better After 50"
(July/August issue) is saying. It blames lack of Vitamin
B 12 and folate for the hearing loss.

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Many of us, for the sake of thrills, would love to ride in a Goodyear
blimp.
How easy is it to hitch up a ride? No! Rides are only extended at the
invitation of the Goodyear Tires company, and normally extended only to
important customers, assorted VIPs and winners of local charity auctions.
Well, for 14-year old Katherine "Kat" Fuscolda, a student at the
Horace Mann School for the Deaf (Allston, MA) she had a dream ride
guaranteed to last a lifetime.
A local store, Sullivan Tire, donated the blimp ride to the school's
annual fund raiser. It was through a silent auction win that enabled Kat
to get that prized ride.
When school reopens this fall after a summer recess, Kat surely will
be asked to give a tale of her once-in-a-lifetime blimp ride.

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

One would think that the doctors know best on the issue
on noise-induced deafness.
Wrong! The media knows the best. This was the finding
by a team at the University of Vanderbilt!
