-- a small town library thanks a deaf person
Richard Swain, a deaf man, visited the Mondovi, Wisconsin
library every day - just to read the latest copy of the USA
Today. He did not read, nor check out any of the library's
books. This library in small town Mondovi (2,700 population)
is broke, stuck with old shelves, furniture and equipment.
There was no money for upgrades and improvements. When Swain
passed away recently, part of his will went to the library!
The library official said that the reason the library
subscribed to USA Today was because Swain would come in just
only for that newspaper!
-- losing a discrimination lawsuit but winning money
A deaf woman in Washington state filed a discrimination
lawsuit, saying her rights were violated while in prison.
This lawsuit asked for $1 million dollars in damages.
She said there was no TTY, no explanation of bail, no
interpreter or other accomodations while she was in jail.
The jury rejected all of her claims but awarded her monetary
award. Why did she lose? Because the county had proof that
they accommodated all of her requests. How much did the county
have to pay for her monetary award? Just one dollar!
-- A new all-deaf hotel
An all-deaf hotel is being planned in Zagreb, Croatia.
The mayor is pushing for this project, and is now
scouting for the perfect location in the city of nearly
800,000 people. It was the request by the Svijet tisine,
a deaf organization, to establish this hotel. It was
approved by the city government. This hotel would
hire only the deaf, but of course, hearing tourists
would be welcome. Zagreb was part of the old Yugoslavia
empire, which no longer exists.
