The general manager noticed another cafe chain hiring the deaf and decided he might just as well as hire the deaf himself! Could deaf people, those with organ implants, be able to have CI's? Yes, according to Dr. Brian J. McKinnon, Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University. His findings were published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology. Yes, there were pros and cons. - Sunday February 12th University of Iowa may start a new program in interpreter training if some officials have their way. - Monday February 13th The state government of Madras, in India, is planning to introduce a bill to allow the deaf to run for public office in local elections. - Tuesday February 14th Some time ago a father of a deaf son was clocking car speeds in front of his house. He was afraid a speeding car may hit his deaf son that is playing in front of the house. The father was advised that if there were car accidents because of quick stops to avoid the radar, then there may be law suits against him! - Wednesday February 15th Media Access Australia distributed its report, saying that more captioned movies are found at movie houses, stressing that multi-screen movie houses must follow this formula - one captioned screen for 6 screens or less, two captioned screens for 7 to 12 screens, and 3 captioned screens for 13 or more screens. The report, however, did not address one thing - small town one-screen movie houses! - Deaf Miscellaneous stuff Because of a lawsuit, University of Kentucky has agreed to caption its football scoreboard. This lawsuit was brought on by a lifelong U of Kentucky football fan, who is deaf. ...... Interpreters that constantly say, RID allows me to do this, and RID allows me to do that, and so on if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Do you ever hit the wrong key when you are typing?  No matter how skilled and talented a stenocaptioner or CART provider may be, there are going to be times when he or she will make mistakes. For people who rely on realtime captioning, it is important to understand what kinds of errors might be made so that one can "read through" the errors without losing the meaning or context of what is being said. We have all probably typed "teh" for the word "the."  Just as on the typewriter, certain types of errors are more likely to be made on the steno keyboard.  The more familiar with realtime captioning someone becomes, the easier it is for you to figure out what the mistake was and to simply read through it. One type of error that people do not make on the typewriter but is very common for stenocaptioners is something called a stacking error. Stacking is caused by one hand moving down for a new stroke before the other hand comes all the way up or the keys don't completely release from the previous stroke. One example of a stacking mistake would be strokes like WAPBT/-D/A. Those are three separate strokes on the steno keyboard that should translate as the words "wanted a."  Occasionally the "-D" and "A" could end up in the same stroke.  Instead of translating "wanted a," it would then translate as either "want ad" or "want add," depending on the stenocaptioner's theory of shorthand.  If you saw "He want add promotion on his job," it probably should have been "He wanted a promotion on his job." A HEARING ASSUMPTION OF ASL SIGNING It is often that a hearing person, that knows ASL, would see two people signing to each other. This hearing person would join in (uninvited) by using ASL - but assuming that these two people are deaf. These two people may actually be Codas or interpreters or sign language students signing to each other! The hearing person would then leave, still assuming that both signers were deaf, while actually they weren't! .............................................................. .............................................................. News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: Under fire in Wisconsin is Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing in West Allis. The Wisconsin Deaf Citizens Task Force has been demanding that the executive director, a hearing person who knows no sign language, resign. This agency is not listed in the TDI directory and does not seem to have its own web site. A friend of DEAFDIGEST editor had to surf the white pages on the web site to learn of its phone number. Calling up the number on TTY - the receptionist answered "GA."  Not even something like "Hello, this is the CDHH, how may we help you?". Just a cold GA greets all incoming TTY calls. ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Wicked snow storms pretty much hit us in parts of USA. Let us take Washington, DC as an example with this emergency captioning/streaming scorecard: - NBC local news - captions barely above bottom streaming - Fox local news - captions barely above bottom streaming - ABC local news - great, streaming on top, captions bottom - Independent local news - no captions but with streaming - CBS local news - great, streaming on top, captions bottom ...... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: Health providers insensitive to the needs and problems of the deaf? A deaf woman in Great Britain needed to make an emergency dental appointment. She ran into hassles with the relay service and with public transportation and as a result, was not able to arrive at her appointment on time. As a result she was turned away at the dental office. Her arguments went nowhere and she was branded as a "troublemaker patient" with the public health authorities. It took her two days to find another dentist that was willing to accept her. .... A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say? At the supermarket, you are paying for your groceries at the check out counter. The woman at the counter asks you something. I thought she said: are you marking?
