That piece of land just was not available at that time months ago, but now it is. The remaining steps needed to break the ground is now routine and just paperwork. Dedication: DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Vic Galloway who departed us. He graduated from Gallaudet intending to become a chemist, but switched gears and became a life long educator of the deaf. His long list of accomplishments would overwhelm this edition - but the most interesting one was the year he chaired the national deaf basketball tournament in Atlanta in 1959. There was a big problem - a team from Los Angeles had the best player in the nation, but he was black. Jim Crow laws in the south did not permit mixing of whites and blacks. Vic was not afraid to confront the Jim Crow people to allow this player to participate. While Vic did not succeed, it set a precedent for future tournaments - that tournament hosts had to make sure that no Jim Crow laws would prevail. Top stories about the deaf: The Clinton Foundation is donating 40 solar-powered streetlights to a neighborhood in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, populated by deaf residents, forced to relocate because of earthquake. Yes, the Clinton Foundation was established by past president Clinton Two deaf paramedics have surfaced in recent news stories - Amber Tansey, Santa Rosa, CA and Chai Wei Xiong in Malaysia. Both are hoping to make it their careers, but acknowledge that discrimination is a barrier. The National Governors Association chairs Delaware Gov. Jack Markell and Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin gave a State of States address at the National Press Club, Washington, DC. The focus of their speech was to hire the disabled, the deaf included. The market swine competition at the Coryell County Youth Fair (Texas) took place recently. The winner is Joshua Horton. He is deaf, and his goal is to become a 4-H extension agent. Creighton University, a well known university in the Omaha, Nebraska area, sensitive or not sensitive to the needs of the deaf? Well, this university has had workshops. One such workshop was titled "Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patients Guidelines For Healthcare Providers." Why is DeafDigest mentioning this? Because the Creighton medical school is fighting Michael Argenyi's request for CART services. He is a deaf medical school student. The federal appeals court panel told the Creighton people that a jury should be allowed to decide on Argenyi's discrimination lawsuit instead of having the lower federal court dismissing the lawsuit! .............................................................. However, that is not true. Every captioner writes somewhat differently. Even though there are some similarities to all styles of writing on a steno machine, each captioner modifies his or her own steno theory. There are a number of steno theories that have been taught by the different court reporting/captioning schools. As the captioner is taught steno theory, he or she is taught the basic location of the keys on the keyboard and what combinations of letters to use to make other letters. For example, in most steno theories, the letters "TPH" when depressed with the left hand will be used to represent the sound of the letter "N" at the beginning of a word. After the captioner learns the basic theory, he or she will continue to tweak their writing throughout their entire career.  Even someone who has been in the business for many years will find new ways to write certain sounds, words, or phrases. You can find forums on the Internet where court reporters and captioners share information about how they write, and new ideas and concepts can be incorporated in all steno theories. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF job interviewers assuming deaf people are not employable for one reason only - deafness! News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: The inaugural ceremony that took place at Pierre, SD to usher in the new governor and lieutenant governor took on an added significance. Lt. Governor Dennis Daugaard is a Coda, the son of Raymond and late mother Florence, both of Garretson, SD. The father is a staunch member of the South Dakota Association of the Deaf (60 years long) and he was in the audience. And the interpreter, not pushed off to a corner of the stage, stood right next to the sworn-in individuals. Is Dennis the first Coda to become a lieutenant governor? People in South Dakota think so. (editor's note: Daugaard eventually became the governor; one would think the South Dakota Deaf Community would leap with joy, thinking a high profile politician is in their corner. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Installed at the International Boxing Hall of Fame at Canastota, NY is the boxing ring that was used for many years at the Madison Square Garden. What about it? Deaf boxer Eugene Hairston, a world contender in the middleweight class in the forties, could not hear the bell ring to indicate the end of each round. As a result, he was getting clobbered by boxers that wanted to sneak an extra punch before going to their corners. To put a stop to it, the boxing officials installed red flashing lights at the corners of the ring. Hairston would see the lights and know the round has ended! Since then flashing lights have been used in all boxing matches. ...... As we began the 2012-2013 academic year, a number of academic departments were merged, combining related disciplines into larger, interconnected departments within the two existing schools: the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Technologies, and the Graduate School and Professional Programs. In August 2013, these two schools will be replaced with three new entities within the Division of Academic Affairs. These will be: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, Business and Human Services, and Research/Graduate School/Continuing Studies/International Programs.  As part of this restructuring, the University seeks a progressive and dynamic leader to fill the position of Dean of the School of Education, Business, and Human Services (SEBHS). SEBHS will house eight academic departments that collectively enroll approximately 600 students in undergraduate majors/minors and master's and doctorate degree programs.  These departments are Business, Counseling, Education, Government and Public Affairs, Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences, Interpretation, Physical Education and Recreation, and Social Work, with approximately 75 full-time faculty members.  Within these eight departments are 15 degree programs accredited by their affiliated professional organizations. Responsibilities: The Dean of SEBHS serves as chief administrator, spokesperson, and advocate for SEBHS.
