Dedication:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Rev. Roger A.
Pickering that departed us. He served as the
Vicar of All Souls' Episcopal Church for the Deaf
in Philadelphia. He was quite active in the Philadelphia
deaf community and civic programs.

Top stories about the deaf:

We have a list of deaf nurses. This list will grow
by one more new nurse that is deaf. There was a big
newspaper story of Kimber Fink, Faith, NC who just
graduated from Cabarrus College of Health Sciences.
She was constantly told all throughout her life that
she cannot become a nurse because of her deafness.

The latest nation to have its own sign language
dictionary is Saudi Arabia. Working on the project
was the Saudi Association for Hearing Impairment.

Gaye Prudence Lyon, a deaf Australian woman, was
denied the opportunity to serve on a jury because of
her deafness. She is planning to file a lawsuit.

Alain Dabdoub, University of Toronto researcher,
is looking into biological solutions for people
that have lost their hearing. Biological solution
may mean one thing - gene therapy?

The Parliament of Argentine has passed a law to force
mobile carriers to make their devices hearing aid
compatible.

We all know that Derrick Coleman is NFL's only deaf

DeafDigest hopes Derrick will show up on more and
bigger commercials - such as McDonald's, Chevy cars,

GESTURES ARE IMPORTANT
Many hearing people do not gesture when they talk. Lack of
gestures often hurt the deaf when they try to communicate
with the hearing.
Gestures important? Well, Jerome Bettis is a famous ex-pro
football player. When he retired, the TV people realized he
was a great speaker - smooth voice and good comments. He
had one problem - he never gestured!
Jerome had to practice for a long time to use gestures when
speaking on TV.
Gestures is not ASL - but it helps a little bit with the
deaf.

ASL THEATRE AT AN UNLIKELY CITY
A group of deaf people is trying to establish an
ASL Theatre.
What is interesting is that the city is unlikely.
It is Montreal where a majority of people, both deaf and
hearing speak French!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Stenocaptioners and CART providers use what are called brief forms,
which are abbreviations for a word or phrase, in order to be able to
write quickly in steno. Even though captioners try very hard to be as
accurate as possible, sometimes they make mistakes.

If the brief form isn't in the captioner's dictionary or if they
slightly misstroke it, captioning errors can occur. Many times these
types of errors occur with proper names or places, so if you're
trying to read through this type of error, try replacing the
erroneous word with an appropriate name.

A few examples would be:
"They went to Luxembourg and beverage."
"President Kennedy told crutch to take his missiles and go home."
"The leaders were a Pittsburgh Pirate and adroit Tiger."

These should be:
"They went to Luxembourg and Belgium."
"President Kennedy told Khruschev to take his missiles and go home."
"The leaders were a Pittsburgh Pirate and a Detroit Tiger."

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

seeing other deaf people use their deafness as an
excuse to get ahead of a long line standing in front
of them

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

A bagel place in Washington, DC posted a help wanted
sign on their windows.

Suppose a deaf person, looking for a job, sees the sign
and walks in and asks for a job, and is turned down.

Is it discrimination.

Two deaf individuals, both well versed with ADA and
disability issues, said the same thing - tricky, hard
to say!

If the job requires taking orders through the telephone
and dealing with front counter customers, it may not
be considered discrimination.

If the job just requires backroom baking of these bagels,
then it may be discrimination.

.......

Did you know that -

Evelyn Glennie is the most famous percussionist, a
form of music that is being played with sticks striking
an object. She has been deaf since childhood; she
does not use sign language. Born in Scotland, she
makes London her home but travels extensively, giving
concerts.

.....

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

It is already pretty much known across the Deaf Community
that Christy Smith will appear on the "Survivor" TV series,
rendering it unnecessary to rehash the announcement.
But we should be aware that she is not the first deaf
person to appear in a competition-type TV series. The first
one was Willie Cooley, who was one of the challengers in
the original American Gladiators series about a decade ago.
Cooley's deafness definitely hurt his chances for a win
because he couldn't hear the starting gun in one of the events.
The Gladiators officials made no accommodations for his deafness.
Cooley, from Virginia, won the right to take part in the
American Gladiators after winning local elimination events
against other would-be challengers.

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

A profile of the next Gallaudet president has been
created for the purpose of guiding the Gallaudet Presidential
Search Advisory Committee into a choice that is going to
make everyone happy.
The Gallaudet board of trustees, however, has to
approve the presidential profile. This is just one
phase, the first of several more timed phases to go.
Lastly a potential Equal Opportunity issue, raised by a
search committee member has been thrashed out.
Jim Macfadden, the Search chair, made these
announcements in a recent email to alumni members.

(this is the presidential search that Dr Alan Hurwitz was
selected as president over a pool of other candidates)

......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

A group of interpreters have planned a tour of these
fancy restaurants in the San Francisco bay area. Listed
are the hearing-owned restaurants that will be on the
tour. Not listed is a deaf-owned pizza place that will
not be toured.

Why?

.......

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A hearing friend was pointing at another hearing fried
and was saying something

I thought he said:
this is darling

darling? As if he is in love with someone?

He actually said:
this is Charlie
