DeafDigest - 20 May 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, May 20, 2014   -- an overlooked TV star A TV program that was popular in the United Kingdom before it was cancelled last year was “Real Hustle.” It was about scams that dishonest people play on innocent victims. One of the stars was Jessica-Jane Stafford. She has been deaf all her life, but functions as a hearing person. No one would know about her deafness. While BBC Three cancelled the program, it seems that truTV.com is showing these reruns.     -- a deaf lawsuit against Redbox thrown out In California, U.S. District Court Judge David O. Carter threw out the lawsuit filed by a deaf man accusing Redbox of discriminating against the deaf because of lack of captions on its DVD movies. Why was it thrown out? The judge said Redbox is just a distributor of rental DVDs and have no control over the way the movies were made. The judge gave a June 13th deadline to have the complaint amended or it would be thrown out of court.     -- the NASCAR and the deaf In many parts of USA, NASCAR is a popular auto racing sport. Many hearing fans follow NASCAR results. What about the deaf? There is a group called “Deaf NASCAR Fans.” This group met recently at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Where do these deaf fans come from? Everywhere – Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Florida, Michigan – a total of approximately 40 fans altogether. Interpreter? Yes! The group tries to meet up at least once a year and they hope to expand the membership base to reduce the burden of these traveling deaf fans.     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 05/18/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 05/18/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
