-- 67 million-to-one odds against a golfer
Beth Bates, a British golfer, shot two holes in one
in the same golf round. Mathematicians have said this
feat has 67 million to one odds. She is deaf, is
oral and does not know sign language. She is a member
of the British deaf golf team that competed against
other national deaf golf teams. Her golfing handicap
is 13.4.
-- A traveling salesman saved life of a deaf girl
Many years ago, the family of Lottie Hinton, a young
deaf girl, living in the rural part of Lousiana,
never heard of Louisiana School for the Deaf. A
traveling hearing salesman, stopping by their house
to sell stuff, told them about Louisiana School
for the Deaf. The surprised family enrolled her
at the school. Years later, Lottie got married,
raised a family, had great jobs and also had a
great life. She passed away this week (Lottie Sevier).
All of her successes in life was because of that
traveling salesman!
-- Deaf Man in Venezuela
If you are touring Caracas, the biggest city in
Venezuela, and also its capital, then there is
a Deaf Man. It is not a person but a name of a
building - the Deaf Man building. In Caracas,
the addresses are not numbers on the house
or store doors or the names of streets. The
addresses are the names of buildings. Examples
are Fat Lady, Trick Corner, Duck's Tail .....
and....the Deaf Man. Why the Deaf Man? No idea,
but possibly many years ago a deaf man lived
in a building, the reason for giving him an
address!
