DeafDigest - 21 February 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, February 21, 2014 -- a deaf member of Canadian women's hockey team DeafDigest editor overlooked another deaf participant in the winter Olympics. It is Meghan Agosta-Marciano, a member of the Canadian women's hockey team. She played collegiate hockey at Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania, and in the game against USA, she attempted 6 shots on goal but didn't score. While she is deaf, she does not use ASL.     -- sign language still being mocked We remember the fake interpreting scandal that has embarrassed South Africa. Yet, there may still be few South African government officials that do not respect sign language. Susan Shabangu, the South African Minister of Mining, was caught on a video as mocking sign language, moving her hands around nonsensically, while listening to a government speech.   -- a special auto repair shop in Texas Silent Automotive is an auto repair shop located in Austin, Texas. It is deaf owned, deaf run and deaf staffed. No one is there to answer telephone calls, but which is quickly forwarded to a relay service. Joel Martinez, the shop owner, said they feel the vibration to know what the car problems are. On Yelp, which can make or break a business, a happy hearing customer posted a very positive comment after getting the car repaired by them at a very reasonable cost and with a short waiting time.
