Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Howard
Watson, a southern Florida resident that
departed us. After graduating from Gallaudet
he embarked on a long career in the vocational
rehabilitation field. He also found time from
his busy work to serve as president of the
Optimist Club of Miami Lakes Deaf, as well
as helping out the local deaf softball team
as statistician. He had a great sense of
humor and often laughed with his many
deaf friends.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to
Myron Goldman that departed us. He
was a long time accountant in the
Los Angeles area before retiring and
relocating to Las Vegas. He practically
saved the 1985 Deaflympics that took
place in Los Angeles, stepping in as
a replacement chairperson, in the middle
of these athletic events. The organizing committee was beset with too many administrative problems and needed a
quick replacement. In Las Vegas he
established the Deaf Silver Knights,
raising money for deaf local causes.
Top stories about the deaf:
The Vault Keepers, in Atulyakala, India,
has been encouraging the deaf artists
and designers with their work, for
public exhibition.
Kenneth DeHaan, ASL teacher at ASL
professor at University of Pittsburgh,
has filed a lawsuit against the
SouthSide Works movie theater. Same
reason as with many other lawsuits -
no captions.
Louisiana School for the Deaf has been
working with the Louisiana State Police
on best ways to train local police
officers on how to deal with the deaf
during traffic stops.
The Mina Restaurant in Beijing
was written up in a newspaper.
All of the waiters in that
restaurant are deaf.
Passengers that bring "fake-hearing
ear" dogs on airplanes, have become
a problem with a number of airlines.

HEARING EMPLOYEE FEELS THREATENED BY DEAF EMPLOYEE
A deaf man was hired by a big company. He was
supposed to be trained by a hearing employee.
The hearing employee was scared that the
deaf person would learn fast and become a better
employee than him.
As a result the hearing employee refused to
train the deaf employee for six months. The
boss warned the hearing employee many times.
But the hearing employee still refused. The
boss got angry and threatened to fire the
hearing employee.
The hearing employee gave up and finally
trained the deaf employee. It was the reason
why deaf employee did nothing in his office
for six months until hearing employee finally
trained him!

Deaf man and hearing man were talking about
sports.
The deaf man thought hearing man said:
Jack Peterson is very good player with the Dodgers
The hearming man actually said:
Joc Pederson is a very good player with the Dodgers
editor's note:
Joc Pederson is the actual name of that player
that play for the Dodgers. It is not a made-up
name

REPEATED DEAF ANGER
A deaf person went to the Dunkin' Donut drive in
to order donuts and coffee. The employee refused to
serve her.
The deaf person complained about discrimination.
The hearing employee was fired and Dunkin' Donuts
apologized to the deaf person.
This should be enough - but this deaf person
continues to complain and complain.
This is not fair to Dunkin' Donuts.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
This week our nation will celebrate a holiday when we can slow down and reflect on the many blessings we have in our lives.
As a profession, court reporters and realtime captioners have much to be grateful for. They have skills and talents that are necessary to record and communicate important messages in our fast-paced world.
I personally am very thankful for the hard work of the realtime captioners who bring us newscasts, sporting events, and other live broadcasts. Much of their work must be done when others of us choose to spend time with our families and friends.
Most sporting events take place on the weekends, and newscasts are often during dinnertime or at bedtime for many of us. There are live events that must be captioned on holidays. When a disaster strikes or an emergency takes place, captioners must be there at all hours of the day and night.
Thank you to all of you who have worked hard over the years to bring access via captioning and CART to people across America.
For all of you who read steno, may I take this opportunity to say:
HAP/PEU/THA*PBGS/TKPWEUFG
For those of you who do not read steno, Happy Thanksgiving to you!

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The FCC headquarters hosted a E911 Disability
Access Summit this week. Everyone was there
(relay providers, TTY manufacturers, national
and state leaders, etc).
Addressed were the accessibility needs of the
deaf, the hard of hearing, the Deaf-Blind and
speech impaired.
The goal is equal access for all on these
internet, video and wireless venues.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Did the FCC emergency broadcast warning test of last
week perform well? According to a deaf resident of
Houston, TX, there was an ASL interpreter on the
TV screen. That interpreter, however, was pictured
"half on the screen, half off the screen"!
