To raise funds for the Career Counselling Agency for the Deaf in the Czech Republic, twelve most famous hearing individuals have been modeling themselves, one month per model. The agency sells calendars of these models at a "Deaf Cafe" in Prague. This agency was founded in 2006 in an effort to teach the deaf job training skills. Malaysian parents are possibly the worst enemies of their deaf children. Making this accusation is Mastika Sijol, an administrator of a rehabilitation center. She said that hearing parents refuse to send their children to the center to help them with their life goals. - Very Hot News Larry Taub, the first deaf headmaster in the storied history of Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, has resigned from his position. This resignation takes effect when school closes for the summer. The school press release said he wishes to pursue other professional opportunities. - Sunday January 15th Tamil Nadu, one of the 28 states in India, has established seven separate disabled people categories. One such category is deaf, and the government is proposing to try to help all the disabled, the deaf included. - Monday January 16th What is a reasonable accommodation and what is not, at least in Great Britain. DeafDigest mentioned several times that deaf diplomat Jean Cordell had her diplomatic job pulled off the table when it was learned that cost of professional lipreaders was too expensive. Great Britain explained that "reasonable accommodation" is how critical is lipreading to her job, how would deaf employee benefit from lipreading, cost of lipreading professional in proportion to the office budget, any precedence in the past with government professional lipreaders, ability for any employer to spend that much money on professional lipreading and would the expenditure be appropriate. The government based its decision on such criteria. - Tuesday January 17th Canada, for some reason, is getting more and more strict with their immigration guidelines as far as deaf immigrants are concerned. It is so bad that the Federal Court of Canada is looking into this issue. A hearing engineer from Philippines originally given a temporary worker visa, wanted to bring his wife and family along. One of the children is deaf and this was the reason for Canada saying no. He filed a lawsuit. Canada was afraid that disabled immigrants would impose a burden on the national welfare system! - Wednesday January 18th Deaf residents of Forth Worth, Texas, interested in the city council proceedings, are now able to watch the captioned discussions. Captions are showed on a special screen that is 3 feet wide, 9 inches high, and is claimed to be clear to those that sit within 50 feet away. It didn't say, however, if deaf people, standing from the back of the room would still be able to watch captions? - Deaf Miscellaneous stuff This past May, Hear USA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. If the Southern District of Florida approves it, this means the company can reorganize while trying to pay off its debts. Whats' the update? An insider said there's much confusion going on as to the real direction Hear USA wants to take. ...... A BLUSHING HEARING EMPLOYEE A deaf employee that can speak very well, had a problem with a hearing employee. That hearing employee always thought the deaf people were dumb, helpless, and cannot talk. Do keep in mind hearing loss is common with musicians everywhere. LEARNING SOMETHING NEW All of us learn something new every day, regardless of our age. One recent blog hooked DeafDigest editor. It said: Learning to go Deaf Never thought of it. It applies to those that are losing their hearing, either because of age or illness or accident. Many people, when they lose hearing, go into denial, refusing to learn what captions, relay services, signaling devices, sign language are all about - and to join these hearing-loss self support groups. This header (Learning to go Deaf) is a step in a positive direction! WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? Without letting me know in advance, students that want to watch a video instead of interacting with hearing students during study hour if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Because it is very important that all caption viewers become advocates for better quality captioning, it is also important for us to understand what kinds of errors are made in realtime captioning. Sometimes people do not understand how a captioner could have made an error because what came up on the screen seems to be totally different from what was said.  They think that the captioner might have misunderstood or misheard what was said.  Sometimes they think that the captioner is not very smart. That may not be the case.  What may have happened was a small fingering error by the captioner, and that turned one word into something totally different. Because the steno keyboard is very different from a computer or typewriter keyboard and because captioners are writing whole words and phrases at the same time, the "typos" that a captioner makes look very different from typos on a traditional QWERTY keyboard. If a captioner slips with one finger, it may not just change one letter in a word, but it can totally change the word into another word. Here is an example of a fingering error. A captioner may have intended to write: "We will be discussing how to prepare for the financial collapse." However, because of a slight misfingering error where the captioner moved his or her right middle finger down slightly, it was transcribed as: "We will be discussing how to prepare for the financial clans." A GOOD RESOURCE FROM THE GOVERNMENT Do visit: http://disability.gov It is a gold mine of information you may need to know about many things. .............................................................. .............................................................. JAFFE VS MATALIN - A LIPREADING MYSTERY Mr Jaffe, a past high school teacher, was easy to lipread. The famous Mary Matalin was impossible to lip read. Why? A past school administrator was asked this question. This administrator said: People with great facial and body expressions are much more easy to speech read. Some of that is cultural. While it is stereotyping, certain cultural groups are more expressive than others. For some reason, people in politics (Matalin) are so poker-faced that they cannot be lipread at all. Worst offenders were university officials, though. .............................................................. ..............................................................
